I think it depends on the parents here... I know about half my friends with kids went for "family names/traditions" and about a quarter purposely avoided "family names/traditions" while the rest wanted unique. My oldest's middle name is Rhys, not a spelling you see commonly here but it's my great grandfathers name. I am the last of my fathers family and wanted my kiddo to have a link to his welsh roots (we also scouted welsh girls names before knowing gender). My second son follows hubby's family "tradition" (seems to be fairly non-planned) of one person being JDO (my hubby and his dad are both JDOs). Our youngest (and last) will either be named after my grandfathers (both passed) or my "grandma" (she was actually technically my nanny but was treated as family and our relationship was more grandmother/grand daughter).
