Rotten Potatoes

So awhile back I dug up one of my potato plants and got a nice looking potato several weeks ago. I left the rest of the row. Today I needed a potato for dinner so I went to dig one up. It was rotten. I dug the whole row up. Each plant had about one potato and half of them were rotten. There were some other very small potatoes (about the size of a lg grape) but I do not think they will grow without the plant. Why would they rot like that?

Is there any way that they could be too wet?

I had something similar happen. Leaving town for 2 weeks in August didn't help them one bit!

Update
: This past weekend we cleaned out the tomatoes and cut back asparagus in the garden. I checked the long dead potato plants that never bloomed, and actually harvested a few. There are enough for a couple of meals and I gave a few away too. That was a nice surprise!
