Thread: Tiny Deck Garden

I finally have growing things!!! Red leaf lettuce and green leaf lettuce. We've had both now. And one of those cute strawberry planters that I've wanted forever. I don't know how well the berries grow, but they sure look cute. lol Here are pictures.





And a small garden helper who got a bit dirty while we were weeding:

We did name "her." It was a long complicated name that I think had horatio in it someplace. Both Robin and I have forgotten. lol

I picked lettuce for Kirk's sandwich last night (we love graveyard shift, right?). He said it was good. This weekend, the local community center has a backyard program. It has several classes, but I'm really interested in the gutter garden one. Have any of you tried that out? There will be plants too. Wonder if I can resist getting just a couple...

This is my first year planting lettuce. Can I ask when you pick it? Can you eat the leaves that are there now?

I've been picking outside leaves and we're eating it now. Since yours is in a row, you can thin it as soon as it's got 4 or more leaves. Leaf varieties do best when about 4-6" apart and head or romaine are happiest about 12-16" apart.

The neatest thing about lettuce is you can just clip the leaf variety plant down to about 1 1/2". It just grows back again for another harvest. Romaine and head lettuce keeps on growing new leaves when you harvest the outside ones. They won't bolt (send up bloom stalks) until the weather gets hot...in the Seattle area that's for two or three weeks in August. lol

I've got 8 plants in each pot. I plan to cut one down to the 1 1/2" height a couple times a week and hopefully the first will be back up and ready to harvest four weeks later. If not, I might need to plant a few more. Maybe in the gutter garden that looks so awesome.

Really, I could eat the leaves of what is there now? How cool! I know that I have them too close together and should thin them. Hmmm, I smell a salad in my future!

You're welcome. I've been stealing leaves every day and so have a couple of the kids. I might need to cut a quarter of the plants back this weekend so they can start growing a new set of leaves.

Joee, I didn't sex it. We just decided since she was so cute and so industrious, that she had to be a she...obviously only females were working out in the garden at that particular point in time. lol

I have new plants to plant. maybe tomorrow. I've been waiting for the heat wave (almost 80) to ease before disturbing their wee little root systems. Soon to hit the ground or rather pots are Chinese chard, basil, a pepper plant, a tomato plant and an oregano or is it a thyme <--- that one is Robin's.
