Annabelle and Daisy are now 2 years, 9 months old. I don't know if they are ready to be potty trained, but I am certainly ready to have them potty trained! It would be nice to have only one in diapers. They have both enjoyed sitting on their potties for several months now . . . the problem is that they haven't yet made the connection that when one sits on a potty, more than just sitting is supposed to be involved The twins will start preschool 2X per week in the fall, and although they're not required to be potty trained for this program, now that it's summer break, it seems like a good window of opportunity. We've got our potties and big girl unders, so let's see how this goes! I'm going to keep a journal of this endeavor, and hopefully years from now I'll look back at it and laugh
DAY 1: June 14, 2007
After their bath in the evening, I decided to put them in their new underwear instead of diapers just for a while until bedtime, to give them a taste of it I guess. They were thrilled with their new panties!! It was hilarious watching them dance around showing off in their Hello Kitty and Cinderella panties. I had them sit on their potties every 30 minutes, and I sat and read to them while they sat. Neither of them did a single tinkle on the potty. They both, of course, peed in their underwear once they got off their potties. Sheesh.
DAY 2: June 15, 2007
When they got up in the morning, Annabelle already had poop in her diaper. I cleaned her up, fed them breakfast and then sat them both on their potties, after letting each of them choose a book to look at while they sat. I left the bathroom door open so I could hear them and went to tend to the other kids. It wasn't long before I heard the girls running back and forth between the bathroom and the playroom. More books. Fine. I got a whole stack of books for them and set it between their 2 potties and told them to stay put! Well, it wasn't long before Kevin came to tell me that they were messing with the toilet paper roll in the bathroom. They pulled and entire brand new roll of tp off the roll!! There was a mountain of fluffy tp on the bathroom floor, and the girls were thoroughly enjoying themselves Mommy wasn't happy. (By this time, probably 20 minutes had gone by since I had first put them on their potties, and neither one of them had pooped or peed in the potty.) I cleaned up the tp mess, grumbling reprimands at them to please be good girls and just STAY ON YOUR POTTIES!! Why I thought they would listen to me is a question I can't answer. Again, a few minutes later I hear them wreaking more havoc in the bathroom and when I went back in there, they were emptying out drawers, so there was makeup, toothbrushes, all kinds of bathroom paraphanalia scattered over the bathroom floor.
This is where my patience ended. I yelled "FINE! You can just wear diapers then!!" And into diapers they went, crying for their big girl underwear.
Okay, I'll try again in a little while
Well, the rest of the day yesterday was pretty much a bust. We ended up spending a good part of the day out (met a friend and her kids at the fountain downtown so the kids could play in the water, and then a picnic lunch). Daisy pooped in her bathing suit at the fountain and I didn't even have wipes with me (diapers yes, but no wipes! Bad mommy!). Thank goodness for lunch napkins By the time we got home, the girls conked out for naps with diapers on. I tried the underwear again later in the day, but they both refused to sit on their potties, so I put them back in diapers.
DAY 3: June 16, 2007
Both girls had pooped in their diapers already first thing this morning. I cleaned them up and, feeling a renewed sense of determination, put them in their big girl panties and made breakfast. I realize the key is to have them sit on their potties at regular intervals. I figure eventually one of them is going to do something in her potty accidentally, I'll make a super big deal over it, and it will all click for them . . . . right?
Well, I put them on their potties roughly every 30 minutes, but no go (literally). After about the third time, they both decided that they were NOT going to be made to sit on their potties anymore. If they're going to refuse to sit on their potties, I can't exactly put them in underwear! So back into diapers they went. The upside was that neither peed or pooed in their underwear this time.
I'm getting the feeling that sitting on the potty is fun as long as Mommy isn't making them sit on the potty. I'm also starting to wonder if I'm pushing this whole thing before they're ready.
. . . so when the twins got up from their naps today, I gave them a choice: diapers or underwear? Annabelle chose a diaper, and Daisy chose underwear. She wore her unders for about an hour and half and I had her sit on the potty 3 times, but she never pottied in the potty. She didn't potty in her underwear either, so I don't know if that's any kind of sign. Anyway, after an hour and a half, she brought me a diaper and wanted me to put it on her, so that was that.
DAY 4: June 17, 2004
Not much to report. This morning Daisy was a little under the weather, so I kept her in a diaper. Annabelle wanted to wear "pants" as she calls them (and she always wants the pink ones - everything has to be pink these days). I had her sit on the potty a number of times but she never went potty on the potty. She did, however, poop and pee in her underwear. After that, she refused to sit on the potty anymore, so I put her in a diaper. They both spent the rest of the day in diapers.
I don't know if I'm pushing too hard, or not hard enough. I don't know if I've picked the wrong time to attempt this. You would think I would be full of answers since I have 2 older children whom I managed to potty train, but it feels like a new experience all over again. Maybe because it's girls this time, or maybe it's that it's twins.
DAY 5: June 18, 2007
Oy. Today was a bust. We had too much running around town to do today, so I didn't even try. Tomorrow is another day.
DAY 6: June 19, 2007
Well, I thought we were off to a good start this morning. Annabelle peed in her potty first thing! I clapped and made a big show of praising her, and she seemed pretty excited. However, she refused to sit on the potty again a little while later, so I put her in a diaper Daisy is refusing to sit on the potty as well, so she's also in a dipe.
Maybe it's too soon to be feeling frustrated, but I'm feeling a little frustrated anyway. I suspect my approach is all wrong, but I'm not sure what it is I'm supposed to be doing. I don't want to let them run around in panties if they're not going to cooperate about sitting on their potties. I don't want to be following them around cleaning up their messes from the floor. And I don't think letting them mess in their underwear so they can feel that unpleasantness is going to do a single bit of good, because they are cloth diapered, so they're already used to feeling the "ick."
I don't know. Maybe I'm pushing them before they're actually ready? Maybe I should lay off and try again in a couple of weeks . . .
