Busy day today!
We went to Stoke Mandeville to try and pick up my uniforms again - thankfully they had got them this time so I came away with two! Then basically when those are dirty I go and drop them in the laundry basket and they give me two more uniforms! woohoo!
I also called S**** today at NHSP and she has arranged for me to do my orientation shifts on *** which apparently is the Women's Medical ward... Not what I wanted but I guess I can't complain too much! :) Apparently I have to call M******* F**** tomorrow to arrange exact times and days.
I tried my new uniforms on as well and Martin took some pics - which I will post up in a seperate post shortly...
All go now!
I've got the first of my orientation shifts tonight... On ward ***, and I start at 8:45pm. It's a night shift...
Then once I've finished I have to drive home, take the boys to my Mums and have a sleep for a couple of hours. Then tomorrow night I've got the second of my orientation shifts! Then as soon as they fax my appraisal sheets over they can get me on the database which basically means that from next week I will be able to start paid work!!!! Woohoo!!!!
So IF I can, and I'm not sure I'll be able too... I am going to phone them on Saturday, and say I can work that night, see if they have anything going. Then from next week I am going to start working properly. Must just remember that my time sheets have to be in on Mondays!
I am really nervous about tonight. I have been told all kind of horror stories - including the fact that at nights they tend to only have two nurses and one HCA to each ward - I am just shadowing someone today and tomorrow but I am worried I will be getting in the way... :?
Anyway... I am excited and yet nervous about tonight - I don't know if I can do this, but I'm going to give it my best!

Well, just got back from my shift.
It was... Interesting... Eye opening... Ok, it was damned boring! LOL
The ward was actually closed as they have a current outbreak. One bay was quarantined, plus someone in mild isolation and another in a side room. The ward was pretty much empty as they were taking no new admissions and everything was very quiet. The youngest was in her 50s the eldest in her late 90s... Exactly what I asked NOT to be placed on... If I wanted care of the elderly I would have gone to a care of the elderly ward or a retirement home...
Anyway, it was quite good. There was one nurse and two HCAs with me. I was shocked at how little discipline there was on the ward, but to be honest I think I'm going to "unload" all that into a completely private, written diary as some of it could be contrued as confidential.
I'm going to be off.. Need to sleep...

I am pissed off!
My shift last night was OK. Very quiet though. And they kind of assumed I knew fully what to do and left me too it! So I took the tea trolley round first, did a few commode duties and Obs (which I've not been trained for officially but I know how to do them anyway, so they left me with it), changed a few pads (which they disgustingly called Nappies in front of the patients - I found that very degrading for them so refused to call them that or acknowledge that I knew what they were talking about until they called them by their proper name) and then they pretty much settled down for the night. I got a 2 hour sleep as we all had 2 hour breaks as it was so quiet and there was a bed specially set up for us in the day room. Last night there was only me, one other HCA and a nurse on duty which kind of put the pressure on a little bit.
I had a job with one patient who has a learning disability and can't speak. She was diabetic and kept foraging (stealing!) food. When I told her to get back to bed and gestured for her to go to sleep she just barked at me, which freaked the Hell out of me... Although she was lovely and she recognised me in the main entrance (which I was surprised about as people barely seem to notice me yesterday!), I've just never been confronted with that kind of thing before.
Everyone was still there thank God, as I was convinced one of the patients would have passed on from the night before, but thankfully she was still there battling on, although looking a lot greyer then before.
I was confronted with slip pan duty in the early hours of the morning - I really feel I messed it up, but she managed to go to the toilet OK so I must have done something right!
Also another of the patients was sick last night, she was being sick and it was black... I was the one left to clean her up (although thankfully I didn't have to give her a bed bath!), so I changed her bed and got her a commode...
I called NHSP today, which was a pain in the arse. They say they've not got me on their database and I said they must have as I am supposed to be working a shift on Saturday night on *** again. They said they'd check it out and get back to me... Called me back 10minutes later telling me they'd cancelled my shift! WTF!!!! I was NOT impressed, but there's nothing I could do except tell them that I am available Wednesday and Thursday night next week.
Thankfully *** have booked me in some shifts on the 24th and 25th August as well, just got to get my booking numbers.
Anyway, guess I'd best be off for now as Martin has just gone to get chinese take away for us... Not sure why as I was under the impression we had no money but hey! I'm not complaining!!!!
Well I tried calling the NHSP Comms centre again to find out if I've finally been put on the database only to discover I haven't. Should have known. So I called John from Stoke Mandeville and told him about it and apparently it's him that was supposed to have put me on.
I found out the NHSP people at MKGH haven't bothered sending off my CRB check either yet - not that it's a problem as I have no criminal records.
Nobody had bothered going over the pension scheme with me either and nobody had sorted out my P45/46.
So I have to go see him on Wednesday to sort that all out. Thankfully he did say I would be on the database by tomorrow, so tomorrow I have to give them a call and put my name down as being available for Wed and Thurs night shifts this week.
He also told me my pay scales... Apparently I get £7.08 for normal nights and £8.45 for Sundays. Doesn't sound too bad to me. :)
I am also going to let them know I am available next week Thurs, Fri and Sat nights! :)
Hopefully within the next 3/4 weeks I will have money rolling in! :P
Good news and bad news.
I am now on the database (woohoo!)... But they can only find me ONE bloody shift in the next two weeks. ****ing typical.
And it's not until NEXT Thursday 5th August... But it is on what will hopefully be an interesting ward... Ward 22, Surgical!
I have had enough of all the farting around frankly. I am going to get in touch with the girls at Oxford tomorrow and see about doing an induction at John Radcliffe and doing some shifts there too.
Also got to go and have a word about my P46 and the Pension scheme tomorrow as well!
