Information on Cost-Effectiveness of Making Baby Food
People who are considering making their own baby food often ask if it is cheeper than buying commercial baby food. The answer is usually yes, but it may depend on how cheep of produce you can find.
I recommend looking in your local grocery adds for the best prices. This is how I found my farmers market/health food store. They have weekly sales on seasonal produce at great prices. It helps to either buy fresh produce in season or to look for sales on the bags of frozen--especially for things like peas and green beans that are difficult to find fresh.

The cost may be more for more expensive fruits and vegetables (mangoes, for example), but I think over all, homemade does save money. In my own experience, when I was making babyfood, I was spending on average $15 every 2 weeks on produce--a lot of that went to babyfood, but some was things that DH and myself were eating also--probably about $5 per shopping trip of it was. So that's probably about $20 a month for homemade. If I had been buying jars, and paying approx $.60 a jar for DD's approx 4 oz a day (she was never a big puree eater--but it would have been less in the beginning and more towards the end, so it averages out to 4 oz a day), that would add up to at least $36 a month--and over 6 months of making babyfood, that would be a cost savings of $96, give or take. DH thinks that's a conservative guess, and we probably saved more than that.
