We are still in the boring stage of the solids, not sure why I'm only doing cereals for the first month but I'm trying to wait till Emy is 6 months to start veggies.
We did rice cereal for 2 weeks with added applesauce just for the taste, now we are doing oatmeal with applesauce, she likes oatmeal better.
I know many of us will be making our own baby food because its easy and a lot cheaper but I think we should also talk about the store bought baby foods, which ones babies like and which ones they hate.
I guess it's ok to talk about this in the solid food discussion...but I have found out that along with solid food comes something else that's a little more, uh, solid. I think you all know what I'm talking about! My poor little man was straining tonight to poop. He was BF, and he'd pull off every few minutes and give a good grunt and his face turned all red. I couldn't help but laugh and he'd look at me like I was crazy! LOL, it was SO funny!
Is anyone doing vegetables before fruits? I've heard that doing the sweet stuff first can make it harder to do the bitter veggies later. BTDT moms....is that true??
Ya' I questioned my decision to cloth diaper the first couple days of solid food feeding. LOL
I didn't have any trouble with either of my boys in giving them fruit first. I've got two very good eaters, so far.
how often are you feeding solids? I've just been doing morning and evening...so I've been giving a fruit in the morning and something like sweet potatoes or squash in the evening mixed with cereal. So far he hasn't really turned down anything....
I got a mesh feeder the other day and gave him some frozen peach slices in that. He loved it!
So far Emy has no problems in that department she still poops 4 (yes 4 ) times a day and they arent very solid, her poops were kinda watery before now they are in between so yes the solids made them a bit more solid.

Now I'm tempted to start giving her veggies sooner than 6 monts, if I make it to the store and find some nice green beans then I think I will pick some up for her.
I have a question about avocados.
They dont last long so if i want to give it to her for 4 days then how do i store it so it lasts 4 days without going bad? I never stored avocados for more than 1 day in the fridge before.
I store cut avocadoes with their pit in a tupperware container in the fridge. We typically use it within a day or two, as well though, in either a salad or mashed for Kaysen. You might want to get a couple for the four days.
Erin, Kaysen gets solids twice a day, usually in the morning and the evening.
Since I didn't have to work today (first day of school postponed until tomorrow due to a main water line breaking and having no water on campus), I took advantage of the day and made baby food since my freezer supply is dwindling.
steamed green beans
boiled peas (frozen since I didn't see any good looking snap peas & honestly I wanted easy)
baked pears - ranks up there with the baked peaches & made the same way
Erin, I'm worried about Evie's poop, she hasn't had a movement in almost 3 days. She seems happy still, no signs of constipation. This is still her first week on rice cereal, which she has only at dinnertime.
Ok, I've got a dumb question: The last couple of days, I've nursed Evie immediately before feeding her rice cereal but when I do that, she barely finishes 1 oz of rice cereal and BM. The first day I fed her rice cereal, it was about an hour after nursing her and she finished 2 oz of rice cereal and BM!! I guess I shouldn't nurse her too early....how long do you ladies wait between BFing baby and feeding them solids?
Sophia - I don't BF, but when I give Ava her cereal, I give it to her first. I make her a 5 oz bottle, and use about an ounce or so to make the cereal. She then polishes off the bottle.
I fed Ava squash tonight. She first made a face, but then was like a baby bird. Could have been because it was 8:00 when I fed her - an hour and a half after when I should have. She ate the entire container then polished off her bottle.
I don't think it makes a difference if you feed fruits before vegetables. They will eat what they like when they like. Alec didn't care for vegetables, and still really doesn't. He'll eat carrots like there's no tomorrow. So far, Ava doesn't like bananas. She liked the sweet potatoes, squash, pears, and applesauce.
Erin - I feed Ava a fruit in the afternoon, and cereal at night. Today, however, she only got one helping of solids because DH forgot to take the carrots out of the diaper bag this morning. Oh, and the day after she had sweet potatoes her poop looked like sweet potatoes. Didn't smell like it though.
