A cerclage is a stitch that pregnant women with incompetent cervix get to keep their cervix closed. What happens is that as pregnancy progresses, a cervix will dilate painlessly and without warning because of the weight of the baby. Without the cerclage keeping a cervix shut, women who have this complication may not carry to term. Most of the time, a person with a cerclage will be put on bed rest or pelvic rest be given a number of other restrictions. Pre-eclampsia is an illness which occurs only during pregnancy or immediately after delivery and can affect you and your baby. Eclampsia may follow pre-eclampsia. HELLP Syndrome is a group of symptoms that occur in pregnant women who have (H) hemolytic anaemia, (EL) elevated liver enzymes, and (LP) low platelet count. HELLP is the medical term for one of the most serious complications of pre-eclampsia, in which there is a combined liver and blood clotting disorder.
