Just wondering what your experiences have been with this?
Yep. Had them stripped TWICE with DS - made me cramp & bleed, but did absolutely NOTHING to stimulate labor. Refused to have it done with DD. Some people it really seems to help get labor started. For me it was way more painful than it was worth!
I had it done with each of my three kids. My water broke within 24 hours by each. That being said, with 2 of the 3 I'd had it done the week before, too, and it didn't do anything. I think it just moves things along if your body is close to being ready. And it was really not very painful for me, at all. I'm hoping my midwife will want to do it at my next appt when I'll be 37 weeks. I'm feeling like my body is ready (but that could be wishful thinking, LOL).
I had them stripped for DD and it did nothing. My OB told me that first babies often do not get moved along by this procedure, but that subsequent babies do because the body is better prepared to deliver.
That said, I had no pain at all either...
I got my membrane strip with Hunter and not even 12 hours later he was in my arms.... at 38 weeks, 4 days.
He didn't really hurt just not comfortable but I'm glad I did it. Water broke 4 hours after I had it done then baby came not long after.
I can't believe your almost there already!!!
I cant believe some of you didnt think it hurt!! Okay I am admittedly a wimp when it comes to pain but I think it hurts quite a bit. I have had it done at some point with all my kids. One nurse described it to me as think of your cervix as a rotary phone and the dr is going to stick his finger up in it and dial it!! That is pretty much head on. Yowzers is all I can say. I have come up off the table every time it has been done to me. Has it worked every time? Nope but it always causes some ctx and some bleeding for me and if I havent lost my plug I usually do then. It HAS started labor for me twice though I think you have to be really ready to go tho and just need that extra little push for labor to start otherwise it wont work. My office wont do it until 38 or 39 wks unless you really have a medical emergency and need to be delivered sooner. My MW will do mine the day before she induces to try to get me going.
Never had it done but it sounds horrible by the phone description. Baby was kicking or hitting the heck out of my cervix last night and I find it to be such a nasty feeling. If hitting it like that hurts, I can only imagine that the sweep would feel somewhat nasty too!
I had mine done with DS at 36 weeks due to Pre-e and being induced...and I have to say, I come off of the table and wanted to kick my DR in the face! IMO it hurt so bad!!! That said, he done that on a Monday, I started leakikng fluid and was admitted to hospital on Tuesday and had DS on Wednesday!
I've just hadmine done.. it wasnt too bad but just uncomfortable! I really hope it does do something!
Seems like a coin toss if it's going to work or not, based on your responses. I had it done with DD- I had no cramping, bleeding, contractions, NOTHING. I was hoping it may have been a fluke that it didn't work for me. Oh, and I definitely remember it hurting!! Of course, I think the internal exams hurt too. lol
Vicky- :wavehello: I actually remembered that you had it done and it worked. I think you were one of the lucky ones!
lil_nasha- I hope it works for you!!
My friend had it done twice with her first and it did nothing. I can believe it probably hurts since I think it hurts when the ob just checks my cervix for dilation! But I'm a total wimp!
