So here is Isabel Mary's birth story:
I went to work Tuesday 3/8/11 (36w4d) and noticed I was having quite a few contractions but didn't think too much about it b/c I've always had a ton of BH. At 11:45 that night I woke up to a small gush of fluid. I told my DH, "I'm not sure but I think my water may have just broken." I went back to bed and about 20 minutes later, it happened again. I called L/D and they told me I should come in. Not sure if this was the real deal, I just left DH at home with son and drove myself. On the way there, nothing happened but then lying on the table, it was obvious and they took one look at me and said, "Oh yes, your water definitely broke."
Since I was a VBAC they hooked me up to monitors and IV's. After a couple of hours, I started getting contractions that were getting regular but not painful. My DH got there around 2 AM and my doula got there about 3:30 AM. I was only 2 cm dilated and baby was so HIGH they wouldn't let me walk b/c of fear the cord would slip underneath the baby.
My doula helped me use the ball and I did get into the tub. By 8:30 AM I was in such pain, I asked if I was far enough along for an epidural. I was 4-5 cm and the epidural was HEAVEN!! I managed to sleep a little. At 7 cm, they were concerned about baby and weren't picking up contractions very well so they put internal monitors for baby's heart rate and the contractions. At 2:30 PM, they came and told me the monitors showed I wasn't making enough progress and they offered a repeat C/S or pitocin to get things moving. They don't generally like to do pitocin for a VBAC b/c of risk of uterine rupture. I almost caved in on the c/s b/c I was just SO tired but my doula convinced them to give me one more hour unmedicated. They came to check the cervix and I was 9 cm!!
At 4:30 PM, I started pushing and after 2 hours, the head was right there. I could see in the mirror a load of black hair and I got to reach down to touch the head. They called the Dr in and at 6:33 PM, a few more pushes and out she came! I got to announce the sex of the baby and they put her on my chest right away. I got to nurse right away and she latched on without any problem.
I then gave her to DH and I had a good little cry, thinking of my mom in heaven dancing for joy over the birth of her new granddaughter. Also, the fact that since my DS was a 30 weeker, I didn't get to experience holding him after birth or nursing him...heck I didn't even get to see him until he was 24 hours old!
I am SOOO grateful for my doula. I firmly believe that I would have ended up with a C/S without her support. Thanks for reading! Here are some pictures of my beautiful dark haired wonder:
