Baby Items! (XP)

I thought I would start a thread to help all of the FTM and also those of us that have BTDT to think about what we need/want for baby.

Questions to think about:

1. What baby item could you have NOT lived without?

2. What items did you forget and have to send someone out to the store and get early on?

3. What items did you get but never/seldom use?

4. List some more essentials of what you want/need!

1. What baby item could you have NOT lived without? - burp clothes and receiving blankets. I had lots of each and it was so nice to grab one and use it for spit ups, messes, etc. I also loved having a wipe warmer for the middle of the night changes. He would wake up screaming when I didn't use it.

2. What items did you forget and have to send someone out to the store and get early on? There really wasn't anything we forgot, but we did have to go buy bottle nipples a lot. DS was SO picky with the nipple we used that it took a lot of trial and error to find one he would take.

3. What items did you get but never/seldom use?
Some of the pacifiers we got we never used. People mean well when they give you a paci for a shower gift but until you know what kind your child will take, its a waste of money to have several of any kind. I also had several diaper bags that I got as gifts and ended up using the free one that the hospital gives you. I considered buying one this time too but think I will wait to see what the hospital has.

4. List some more essentials of what you want/need! I want a moby this time and the aden & anais blankets. I also need bottles because I sold all of mine in a garage sale.

I'm sure I will think of more things later.

I love this thread by the way! Smile It reminds me of the things I had and didn't have and what I would like to remember for this time.

1. What baby item could you have NOT lived without? 1, the bouncy chair. DD LOVED that thing, and stayed in it until she was too big. 2, Swaddle blanket things... those helped her sleep SO good, especially in the early days when she had jerky arms and legs.\

2. What items did you forget and have to send someone out to the store and get early on? I don't think there was anything really.. we did have to buy several different kinds of bottle nipples too though.

3. What items did you get but never/seldom use? Uhhhm... well we got about 6 diaper bags and 50 bottles of lotion/baby oil/etc and I still have some brand new ones.

4. List some more essentials of what you want/need: This time around I really want a bassinet for easy access beside my bed and a sit n stand stroller... that's about it.

1. What baby item could you have NOT lived without? His swing! He was colicky and the only thing that would quiet him was putting him in the swing, he slept a lot of the time in there.

2. What items did you forget and have to send someone out to the store and get early on? I can't remember if there was anything.

3. What items did you get but never/seldom use? Certain pacifiers, he would only take Avent and we had tons of other kinds but he didn't like them.

4. List some more essentials of what you want/need! Definitely a double stroller.

1. What baby item could you have NOT lived without? Luna Lullaby Swaddling Cloths I could NOT have lived without these swaddling blankets! They were the best and the only ones big enough to last until Nathan was old enough to sleep without them. Also....my Luna Lullaby Bosom Baby Nursing Pillow. The Boppy has NOTHING on that pillow. Also...our swing and an entertaining mobile.

2. What items did you forget and have to send someone out to the store and get early on? Wow...nothing really. There were lots of things we discovered would make life easier...but nothing we forgot. We did end up trying lots and lots of different bottles, but you can't really foresee that this might be a problem until baby comes.

3. What items did you get but never/seldom use? Baby wouldn't take a paci...so I agree on that. Boppy...never ever ever got used. Nipple Pads..I didn't leak. I still have hundreds of them. We got some formula and never used that. Cloth diapers....I spent tons of time and money on cloth diapers and we just hated them. Baby carriers....I tried so many different kinds, but Nathan just didn't like them. I used them maybe 4 times total. Still have them in case for this baby though.

4. List some more essentials of what you want/need! I want to try an ergo this time. It's the only carrier we didn't try because of the cost.

1. What baby item could you have NOT lived without? Bouncy seat and/or traveler swing

2. What items did you forget and have to send someone out to the store and get early on?
That would be the traveler swing.

3. What items did you get but never/seldom use?
Changing table - a blanket and a flat surface works just fine. Also, the Diaper Genie.

4. List some more essentials of what you want/need!
BIBS. I NEVER HAD ENOUGH.

So true - my couch has seen more dirty diapers than our changing table. What a waste!

1. What baby item could you have NOT lived without?

Crib and all of the necessities (mattress, sheet protector, sheets), bouncy chair, breast pump, changing table

2. What items did you forget and have to send someone out to the store and get early on?

pacifiers- I didn't want to use them because I was breastfeeding but they were a lifesaver

3. What items did you get but never/seldom use?

I bought a crib bedding set and I have never used the quilt that came with it. I will use it as a play blanket for this baby.

4. List some more essentials of what you want/need!

We have all of the big ticket items but for this baby I am going to get:
1. Clothes. Probably 7-10 newborn outfits and then 10-15 0-3 months. I'm sure I'll get most as gifts and from consignment.
2. Diapers and wipes
3. if it's a girl: Crib sheets, breathable bumpers, paint for the new room, wall decals that go with my undecided theme

We use our changing table all of the time. We still use it to get DS dressed in the morning and for bed. I like not having to bend over to get him dressed.

1. What baby item could you have NOT lived without?

THE SWING. It was a miracle worker. At first I was afraid to use it b/c all of the well-meaning "experts" like to tell you that if you use a swing to put a baby to sleep, the kid will never ever learn to fall asleep on their own. That's a lie. Even if it's true, who cares??? My kid would sleep for 8 hour stretches in that thing...Life. Saver.

Also, Desitin diaper cream. Found it worked miracles on really bad bum rashes.

2. What items did you forget and have to send someone out to the store and get early on?

D-cell batteries for the swing. I didn't have the plug in kind. Didn't care...I would have spent my life savings on batteries.

Oh, and lanoline...no one told me that a bad breastfeeding latch = cracked and bleeding nipples.

3. What items did you get but never/seldom use?

Soothers and recieving blankets. Kid wouldn't take a soother, and I ended up with a total of 57 receiving blankets. Since I did laundry pretty much every other day, I always had clean blankies...probably just used the same 6 or 8 over and over again.

4. List some more essentials of what you want/need!

I had kind of a crappy diaper bag...it was too small, wouldn't hold enough stuff. This time I'd like to get a nice stylish one that I can also keep my purse stuff in.

1. What baby item could you have NOT lived without? Her bouncy seat, the kind that vibrates. She loved this and it would calm her down whenever you put her in it.

2. What items did you forget and have to send someone out to the store and get early on?
better breast pads. I leaked a lot in the beginning and the cheap disposable ones were pretty uncomfortable so we went and got some cloth ones.

3. What items did you get but never/seldom use?

The swing because she absolutely hated it.
Burp cloths. She rarely spit up, and the burp cloths were tiny so when we did need something while burping we would use the receiving blankets. (she hated being swaddled so they were never used for that)

4. List some more essentials of what you want/need!

For this one I would like to look at a nice carrier to make it easier to juggle the two of them. I had a carrier for my first, but it was too hard on my back to carry her, and I found that I overheated too quickly. So I am going to try to find something breathable, and that won't hurt my back.

I am also debating on getting a sit and stand stroller, but I will have to test it out in stores to see how heavy it is first.

If its a boy we will need clothes, but if its a girl then we have enough baby clothes.

1. What baby item could you have NOT lived without? The Ergo (I could get stuff done in the house with this on and DD would sleep. If she was fussy and I put her in it she would fall asleep. I took her on a plane trip with this and could walk through security checks with it on and her asleep in it). Swaddle Me blankets. Happiest Baby on the block DVD. Boppy. Exersaucer.

2. What items did you forget and have to send someone out to the store and get early on? The Ergo.

3. What items did you get but never/seldom use? Bouncy seat, Bumbo.

4. List some more essentials of what you want/need! I think I want a co-sleeper this time.

1. What baby item could you have NOT lived without?

DS#4 LOVES his Aden and Anais blankets. LOVES, LOVES, LOVES them! His pacifiers but the ones he got from the hospital after he was readmitted.

2. What items did you forget and have to send someone out to the store and get early on?
Nothing, really. We were pretty much stocked up until he grew and became more conscious and mobile.

3. What items did you get but never/seldom use?

Ugh...he HATED his swing and bouncy as well as the bumbo. He has always wanted to be in the mix so just sitting back and watching has never excited him.

4. List some more essentials of what you want/need!

I really want a Gia Breastfeeding Pillow and I've been using an old purse for my diaper bag but it's almost too small for one so I know it will be for 2. Petunia Picklebottom now has a bag called the Wistful Weekender and it is so big! I will be getting this!! Oh, and a ring sling by Snuggybaby. I am also thinking about a Bali Breeze Wrap but we'll see.

If it's a boy we are pretty much set with clothes. If it's a girl, we'll have to stock up on tu-tu's! Wink

1. What baby item could you have NOT lived without?
Our bouncy seat! Both DS and DD loved it and hated the swing.

Our moby wrap and baby hawk. I used both of those carriers all the time. They are excellent!

Our cloth diapers --- love, love them!

Cloth nursing pads....Imse Vimse brand. Yes, they show through, but I found them much more comfy than the plastic ones, which felt yucky.

Feet Suits with ZIPPERS...not snaps. There is nothing worse than trying to do those d*mn snaps in the middle of the night.

The Miracle Blanket....best swaddling blanket ever. DD slept great until she out grew it. She was sleep 10 hours a night at 5 weeks!

2. What items did you forget and have to send someone out to the store and get early on?
Nothing that I can think of....we had a lot of stuff!

3. What items did you get but never/seldom use?

Bumbo -- both DD and DS hated it.
Boppy pillow -- I found it just didn't work that well. I got a My Breast Friend for DD, but actually never used it either. DD was a bigger baby, so she was easier to position to nurse.

4. List some more essentials of what you want/need!
Nicer nursing bras....I cheaped it up and have always regretted it. My nursing bras are all ill-fitting and falling apart. I wish I had just gotten nice ones the first time. It would have saved $$ in the long run.
