DHA Supplements?

Is anyone taking DHA/fish oil supplements? If so what kind, where did you get them?

I took DHA with Nicholas 2nd tri through breastfeeding. They were the Expecta Lipil ones by Enfamil. I plan to take them again for this baby....my mom ate a lot of fish when pg with me and my brother and we both turned out pretty smart so I figure it can't hurt Smile

I just started taking the Mega Red fish oil supplements, it's actually krill oil. My doctor wanted me to take them for my cholesterol because it's a little high and I didn't want any cholesterol meds so I'll continue taking them and figure it's great to take while pg too. We got them at Target last week.

Ooo, ooo, me, me!!!

I started taking them at the beginning of the cycle and then read how good they are for developing baby and am continuing!

I am taking WholeMega fish oils by NewChapter. It has 16 Oils and includes omegas 3, 5, 7, 9. It's also minimally processed and filtered but screened for toxins. Also, unlike some companies, they don't use the liver, etc so they can keep filtering down while also removing toxins.

They are expensive but I get mine through VitaCost.com and they are much cheaper.

Christina- How many do you take? Did you get the specific "prenatal" ones? That is a really good price if you only take 1xday. I am really weary of fish oil that you can buy that doesn't state that it has been screend for toxins...I would hate to take something to HELP baby but end up hurting baby because of high levels of PBAs and mercury.

I'm taking the Target brand DHA prenatal supps. I don't remember how much they were, I had them leftover from my last pregnancy last fall. But they are Target brand, so I am assuming that I bought them because they were less expensive than the name brand. Wink

I take 2 a day. I'll be ordering more today so I don't run out. I just feel comfortable with company and the product because, like you, the toxins in some are frightening. I also really appreciate the minimal processing so it ensure even more nutrient.

I'm willing to pay for good supplements even if it is all in my head. My prenatals are expensive, too, but again, a company I love, they are all natural, have holistic benefits and don't make me sick.

Oh, sorry, forgot...no, not the prenatals. I did a side by side comparison and couldn't really see a difference in what they contained, just the amounts. And the prenatals looked like you had to take 3 or 4 pills. I think the ones I have are 120 pills but I don't remember the dosage...maybe 1000?

Crap you guys! Now you have me all scared of my Target Brand! The Target Brand is "Plant Pure" (meaning, I think, that it comes from plants only) and says "Fish Free and Free of any Oceanic Contaminants." That sounds like it's probably okay. Right? Right? LOL

I'm still on my samples from my OB. The first one was ok, but the one I'm on now is awful! It's called NestabsDHA. BLUH! Why can't they cover up the after taste?! I'm having my first bouts of nausea and it just adds insult to injury. Ick! The next sample I have is called CitraNatal Assure. Hopefully its not as bad.

Alissa- Those are the kind I am looking for! I'll have to check out target thanks. Christina- They are pretty pricey! eek! I think the Expecta run $11/month and usually have a coupon inside for more.

I think they sound good, Alissa. Just curious how they are fish oils or what they contain and how they are derived...hmmm...off to google!

But yeah, the concerning area is the contaminants and Mercury that are filtered through the kidneys and other organs. Some companies have been known to use whole fish so the levels are high. But, no fish, no problem.

I take Carlson's Fish Oil. I take 2 tsp a day. It's lemon flavored so it tastes really good and they have a freshness guarantee on the bottle, that their fish oil is regularly tested to be free from all chemicals.

Angela - Yes, the Target Brand is Up & Up and it says compare to Expecta, so I'm guessing they are comparable.

Christina - I guess mine aren't fish oil - it looks like the Omega 3's come from plant oils such as Sunflower Oil and Rosemary Extract.

You guys gave me a bad moment where I was suddenly scared I was giving the bean Mercury Poisoning! LOL

Christina, I love VitaCost!! Biggrin I'm going to look into the WholeMega fish oils by NC. Do you mind if I ask what prenatals you're using? I have the prenatals by Rainbow Light and am starting to cut it in half and take twice a day so that I have a chance of better absorption.

I take Rainbow light, too! Love that they don't hurt my tummy. I used to take the NewChapter prenatal but you have take those 3x a day and I always seemed to forget...but I really loved them. I've been thinking of changing back now that I'm home and more likely to remember.

With my first pregnancy I just bought the CVS brand Prenatals with a DHA supplement (2 pills a day). The samples that I got from my OB all made me sick beyond belief...we decided to try store brand and no vomiting!! I ran it by my OB and he said they were totally safe. I will be taking those again for sure...way cheaper and CVS always has them on sale BOGO. Biggrin
