Doppler question

I got my doppler today and have come to the realization I am completely doppler illiterate! Where do I even begin to find the little beans hb?

I just answered in Roni's thread, but here would obviously be the better place...

What I've found works for me:

1. Empty bladder for me--though they say full. But perhaps one works better than another for some people. Experiment...

2. Do you know which side the placenta is on? Mine's on the left and I can often find baby there.

3. The placenta (the whoosh-whoosh sound) is a big clue. Once you find it, stay in that area.

4. Go down LOW. Just above the pubic hair line. Or even at it.

5. Go slow, inch by inch. Especially with the Sonoline B--I had to search much more systematically with it.

6. Try with headphones first--things are clearer that way.

7. Use lots of gel.

I can't really think of anything else. Good luck! How exciting!

What ^ she said. Last night I got mine out because I wanted to record the sound and it took forever to find it. I had to go slow and look every where, even after I found the placenta. Sometimes I have to move the wand around a bit in the same spot too - like push it in harder and get it at different angles. It can be a pain to find but once you do you know its worth it. And sometimes, as soon as you find it, the LO swims away. LOL

I have a feeling im going to have to press REALLY hard since im already on the chunkier side. Do you guys lay on your back or side? I tried on my back. I didnt try long, maybe 5 mins, because I had DS bouncing all over the place wanting to use it.

I'm pretty padded too, but I always thought the area right by your pubic line remains "thin." In my case, my fat starts right above it. Am I just bizarrely designed?

I lie on my back. The first time took me probably 20 min (with the supersonic rental--it might take longer with the SB).

I agree with all of the above.

I lay flat on my back and if it's a harder surface, you'll have even better luck. The amount of tummy *ahem* padding does make a difference, too.

One not, my baby is currently very high. Right under my belly button to be exact. Since I know my placenta is to the left and at the top of my uterus, I know to search higher than lower. And this is completely different than with DS#4...he was super low and I had to search down near my pelvic bone.

If this is your first Doppler experience, I'd say be prepared to spend a good 15-20 minutes searching. It can take a while until you get it just right.

I guess I'm lucky at the moment--I fear the day the baby goes higher and I have to listen through layers of fat.

Another position to try is laying on the bed with your feet hanging off.. does that make sense? It arches your back and brings your uterus to the surface.

I was thinking about that because I was laying down w my son last night and layed down on his bed like that and noticed how stretched things were.
