Fiona Avery is here!

She's here! Fiona Avery was born Saturday January 21 at 9:45 am, weighing 7 lbs 15 oz. She is a healthy, happy little girl.

My water broke at 4:00 am, and contractions started around 5:00 am. I paged the midwife, who told us to hang out at home until the contractions were 5 min apart for an hour. By 7:30, they had been 5 min apart for an hour, so I paged her again to see if we should go to the hospital. She said that I was still in the early stages, and to page her back in an hour. By the time I paged her at 8:30, the contractions were 2 min apart, so I told her that we were going to the hospital immediately! We arrived at the hospital at 9:00, and Fiona arrived in the delivery room at 9:45...talk about cutting it close!

When I first arrived at the hospital at 9, the pain had gotten really intense, so I asked the midwife if I could have an epidural, and she said no problem. But before she could even check me to see how far dilated I was, I felt Fiona drop into the birth canal and I needed to start pushing - she was coming right then and there! So the midwife checked me, and while she was doing that I could see concern on her face...something was wrong. She called for the doctor and a team of nurses....turns out that Fiona was Frank Breech, she was coming out bum first. This was a surprise because she had been head down during all of my check ups. So the team rushed me down to the emergency operating room where the doctor showed up and took over.

The doctor was amazing...I was freaking out and crying, but she was very calm and reassuring. She gave me the option to either have to have an emergency c-section or deliver vaginally, which apparently is very unusual because most doctors would have just automatically done the c-section. So I opted for the v birth, and a couple of quick (and incredibly painful!) pushes later, Fiona arrived safe and sound.

Overall I am really happy with how the birth went...my midwife was great, and even though I hadn't counted on having any complications, or having an OB do the delivery, I am really glad that we delivered at the hospital and that we had a full medical team at our disposal to help deal with the situation. I'm also glad that I didn't end up having an epidural, because I think having to recover from that on top of my tearing and stitches would have been tough.

Anyway, Fiona is a great little baby - she's an amazing eater and sleeper, and is overall just very content and happy. We are enjoying some quiet time today, but who knows what tomorrow will bring!!!

I will try to pop on to say hi when I can, but for now just wanted to give everyone my update.

Congratulations ! I'm so glad you were able to have a vaginal birth eventhough she was breech.

Congrats! What a great birth story! I am amazed they gave you the option of delivering her breech rather than do a immediate section!! So awesome!
