Names - Thoughts on Veronica?

Hi girls! I've been lurking a lot but this is my first official post on the January board. So, first things first, HI!! Biggrin I'm super excited for our January babies!!

The reason I'm posting is to get your input on baby names. DH and I are really struggling. We had chosen the name Alexandra for our little girl, but recently found out that my SIL and BIL are naming their little girl that (and they're due 3 months before us). We were really bummed!

So now we're searching for other options. Our last name is very common so we want to avoid the super popular names. We also want something that is strong, sophisticated, and can be formal for her later in life.

What do you think of Veronica? Impressions, thoughts, like/dislike instantly? I am going back and forth, can't decide if I like it.

Thanks for your help, and if you have any other ideas, throw 'em at me, I'm all ears!

HI and Welcome!!!

It's not a LOVE IT name but it doesn't totally turn me off. We have a few names that we may use if we have more girls, as it is we don't even know if we will have one. lol. Awdrianna and Angessa-Anyaysa. We like more different names though, and I LOVE classic names. I have a Shawn and William. If this baby is a girl her name will be Rose Afton.

Look up up the more classic names as that seems to be what you are really looking for. Don't know if I was really much help, sorry. Sad

Do you ever come across a name and immediately think of someone you knew with that name and you can't have a genuine opinion of it after that? That's how Veronica is to me...the ones I know are great people, but to me its just hard to say yes or no on it because I can't get them out of my head.

But its definitely not a super trendy, popular name, its sophisticated for when she is older and she could have a cute nickname as a kid.

I do like Veronica, but I don't think I would choose it. It does not sound very feminine to me. I also tend to like names that have nick names. I have known a few Veronicas who went by "Ronnie"... but I don't really care for that! I think if I used it I would do it as a middle name.

I don't know if this helps or not! Good luck with your naming journey!

Yes, this helps! From the initial responses I'm gathering it's not a name people are going to love. I want something that is strong, not trendy, but also elegant and beautiful... I am thinking it's back to the drawing board. THANK YOU, thank you!

Any more thoughts are welcome too.

First, Hi and welcome Smile

Second, I'm honestly not a fan of Veronica....but there are always going to be people that don't approve of the name. It has to be something both you and your husband really like. Have you tried looking through a baby name book?

I think that whatever name you choose there will always be someone who doesn't like it. Go with whatever name you and your hubby end up picking. If you are happy with it- than thats what counts!

Hi and Welcome!! :wavehello:

I agree that if it's a name that you really like and one that you can see your child liking when she grows up, then you shouldn't let others sway you from it just because it isn't their favorite name. Some names that aren't common take a bit for people to get used to and remember, your baby will add personality to the name. Smile

Maybe you've already used this but if not the SSA site is a great place to be able to see how popular the name that you're considering is in the US.

I like the name Veronica personally....and I think that just because some people dont like it does not mean you should avoid using it. There are always going to be people who dont like the name you chose but it is you baby! I say go for it if you and DH like the name.

However, in response to your desire for a strong and beautiful but not trendy name - how about Julia? We had the same requirements for DD1 and that is the name we chose. We get compliments on it all the time. Smile (Of course I am partial to the name but thought Id throw it out there!)

This!!

In fact, we kept ds2's name a secret until he was born, just for fun. When we called and told my parents he was born and his name (Weston) my dad said "Weston? That's a terrible name!" Got to love the honesty! LOL But you hear of people giving input before a baby is born, it just surprised me that my dad would say that after the fact. But it has become (shhh) my favorite of my 3 kids (first) names because it is a nice name, known but uncommon. Dh feels the same!

Idk if anyone remembers the Elvis Costello song "veronica," but that is what is in my head now. Other than that I don't really have anything negative to say about it.

The only reason I wouldn't use it is that there doesn't seem to be any nicknames for it. My SO & I LOVE Clementine, but we just didn't want people calling her Clem so we have passed on it.

I like Veronica. I have known a few who go by "Ronnie" or "Vonnie" as a nickname.

I also love Sabrina. You can use Bree as a NN.

Happy choosing!

Yes! It's been stuck in my head since reading this!

Names are so tough. My MIL still hates DS's, and will comment about it, but it doesn't bother me. His name is Horatio, a family name, and he goes by Rache, the nickname for Horatio. (Pronounced Ray-sh) I love, love his name. It's unusual, but strong and very masculine IMO. And it fits him. So, I say if you like it, go for it! Some people won't like, but there's no pleasing everyone. Smile And like another poster said, your LO will make the name her own, and attach her own vibe to it.
