NT Scan! And Gender!

Everything went great at this morning's NT scan. First off...let me just say, it's amazing how much things have advanced in just 4 years since the last time we did this. I had my choice...either watch on a huge plasma tv or these groovy personal glasses with the screen on them. I went all futuristic and wore the glasses.

Baby looks perfect. Measuring 12w4d...which is right on with my calculations, but 4 days older than my Dr's. Nuchal thickness is 1.2 mm which sounds great. Will have to wait for blood test results of course, but I'm encouraged by the low number.

Then....the Dr. asked if we wanted to know the sex....DH said, "well, we'd be out of luck if we didn't because it looks pretty clear". So, as far as you can tell this early...and boy did it look obvious, looks like Nathan is going to have a little brother! We're very excited...but a bit sad for my Mom who was really hoping for a daughter.

OH...and the placenta is on the right side...so that fits in line with that relationship between placental location and gender study.

We got a DVD (which I'm watching right now) and some photos. My next ultrasound is in 6 weeks.

Here are the photos of our little "Trackie"...That's the nickname Nathan picked out for the baby.

Yay for a great scan and great pictures!! Yay for an early gender screen! Really is there that much of a difference between 12 weeks and 15 weeks where most ultrasound places can tell?

Yes! Because boys and girls BOTH have a protrusion that looks like a penis like at 12 weeks. From a toilet shot it's only a 50/50 chance, and It really kind of disheartens me that OB's and technicians are doing this to moms.. *sigh*

To the original poster. I posted a link on the other thread, but before you get your hopes up would you please read through and view this link: I'm just shocked that Dr. don't know more about fetal development to know NOT to guess gender this early Sad

I am a mom to many, and I want to post and just say congratulations on your sweet little boy! (boys are super cool, I have 4 of them!!) But I don't want to give false information when I know better.

I'm so happy to hear that your baby is nice and healthy Smile That is fantastic news. There is always a high after getting to see your baby on ultrasound.

There actually is a lot of difference. I think I read that the organs finish developing at about 16 weeks. Right now, at 12 weeks they are the size of a pin head. Of course, scans make them bigger so we can see all the parts of baby, etc, but yes, there is a huge difference between what the gender looks like now and what it will look like in 4 weeks.

This is a great resource...

Thanks so much for the link...that's amazing! We haven't thrown away the list of girl's names yet. LOL! I know we've still got to wait to know for sure....but I didn't realize how similar the genitalia looked at this point, so thanks so much for sharing.

Hopefully everything will become all to clear in 6 weeks. Smile

I didn't know either! When I was preggo with DS#4 I swore I saw something that screamed boy at his NT scan. Went to search Google and came across that site. Now, he was a boy but (and your tech/doctor could very well be right on, especially since he got to see everything) I have no clue if what I saw was really what I thought I saw, you know?

After checking out the link, it does look like it could be easy to think any protrusion seen in that area is a little boy part - especially with how clear ultrasound pictures are now days. No one even ventured a guess during our ultrasound. But I think we can all agree boy or girl, it is a nice feeling to get a great NT u/s. Congrats! Smile
