Pregnancy and sickness

I know you are really limited to what you can take when pregnant so I am struggling to figure out how to make it through the day lately. I've been having bad headaches everyday and Tylenol is just not cutting it. Not even Tylenol and a cup of coffee help. Last night I got a full blown migraine and was miserable. I normally take a daily migraine preventative so im worried about how to manage them now.

Also, I have a lot of post nasal drip and am starting to get a sore throat. Normally I would start with a dayquil/nyquil regimen until I felt better, or my allergy meds, but those are all off limits.

So please, anyone, I need natural remedies or meds I can safely take. Any advice, besides call my ob tomorrow, which I plan to do for the migraines?

I had to go to the hospital for shots of morphine with both my pregnancies due to migraines. Not fun at all. Try a cold pack to the back of your neck or forehead (whichever place feels better).

You can also try putting ice on the fleshy part between your thumb and first finger - it is an acupressure point. You can also try pressure there. Works best on the hand that is colder to the touch.

As for the cold/nasal drip, try a cup of hot water with a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and a tablespoon of honey. If you can stomach it you can up the vinegar to 1 tablespoon. Has to be apple cider vinegar.

On my list for safe medicines to help with the post nasal drip:

Sudafed
Chloraseptic throat spray
Claritin
Benedryl

For your migraines: I would call your doc. They can prescribe Rx painkillers that are safe for you and baby. I'm pretty sure they could prescribe you Tylenol 3 or percocet type meds, but keep in mind they are narcotics so you may not want to take it more than absolutely necessary if your doctor does prescribe them.

I hope you feel better Jenn! :bigarmhug:

I am lurking here (haven't officially introduced myself yet) but I also have friends who swear by apple cider vinegar for allergies/runny noses/itchy eyes. My friend takes 1T when symptoms hit hard.

Claritin was wonderful during my pregnancy with DS#4 because I had such terrible nose issues...it was always running or stuffed up!

As for the migranes, that's a definite tough one. I knew a friend who used a menthol type oil that was placed under the nose (on the upper lip) and it worked for her. Perhaps there is a homeopathic remedy that is safe for you similar to that?

Oh I forgot to mention: sometimes just a little caffeine can help ward off headaches. Do you drink coffee/soda? Maybe just 1 cup/can would help.

Thanks everyone. I don't have any apple cider vinegar at home so I had a cup of hot water with lemon and honey this morning. Yeah, that didn't help, lol.

I called the OB this morning and they don't want me taking anything for my migraines besides Tylenol, riiiight, like that helps a migraine. I'll have to discuss that with him again at my appt on Friday.

As far as this post nasal drip goes they want me to start with the nedi pot - which I do daily anyway - and then move to sudafed or benadryl. I'm kind of hestitant to take something this early in the pregnancy but being sick, pregnant and taking care of a toddler and working all day at work may just put me over the edge if I don't feel better soon.

I actually have been using my essential oils, I bet that's what she uses too. Wintergreen and peppermint are good for headaches. I put so much on me the night of my migraine I don't know how dh slept next to me, lol. I love essential oils!

:bigarmhug: I'm sorry you've been feeling so awful Jenn. I've been getting some headaches lately, but not bad enough to require meds. With DS#1 I used to get some bad migraines and taking some Tylenol with a little bit of Coke always helped. I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I hope you feel better soon.
