Unless you get an ultrasound that is too early to hear the HB with the doppler. If you use the key words of "irregular periods" that may get you an u/s though if you choose to use them Smile

You should really call and just ask what their first appointments entail. Every office is different.

With my office the first appt is just paperwork and bloodwork. The second appt is where you see the OB and get a pap and us. Many doctors offices don't have a u/s machine in office so you may be sent elsewhere for that. Also, a lot of doctors will want you to have all your labs, etc before going through and doing the pap/us.

well they trnsferred me to a hgh risk ob so they have the us in the office and i believe they do us more often just to make sure everything is alright so we shall see

Why are you considered high risk?

If you're curious, just call. At my first midwife appointment, she did a vaginal exam and performed a STD test (required by the state, but whatever), took a pee sample to confirm pregnancy, then we just talked for about 10 minutes. At my next appointment, they'll do blood work and get consent for any screening tests we may want (we don't want any), then use the Doppler to find the heartbeat. If she can't find the heartbeat, we'll get sent over for an ultrasound, but otherwise no ultrasound until 20 weeks.

That's just how my practice rolls, though.

I'm curious why you are high risk too.

Well Im considered high risk because Im diagnosed as bipolar....(not something im proud of) but they said with the stress and stuff they just rather be safe than sorry and keep a better eye on me. Im on medications and the dosage was lowered and they are considered the safest route. I ended up getting an earlier appointment and they said they will do a urine test and ultrasound tmw and then next thursday they will do another ultrasound and blood and all that stuff.

Nothing to be ashamed of.

It looks like it can be tricky to balance the health of the mother with the health of the baby. Just make sure they're watching you closely and not just baby, ok?

Good luck at your appointment.

Good luck at your appointment today! You should be able to see the heartbeat as long as you are as far along as you think you are Smile

And I echo Christina when I say there is nothing to be ashamed of with bipolar. I'm glad they are keeping a close eye on you to make sure that both YOU and baby are doing ok. I had post partum depression (I know this doesn't compare) but it really isn't something that is YOUR fault, it's a chemical thing in the brain!, I applaud you for getting help to take care of yourself (and now baby!).

Well I went to the doctor today. They gave me the verification I needed for insurance. But they took so long doing that, that the ultrasound person left so I have to wait till thursday. Ugh this sucks. Oh well they gave me a lot of stuff to read and they are wheaning me off of my antidepressent and keeping me on my mood stabilizer. Hopefully that works well. Im keeping a positive attitude that i can handle it. On another note, I am exhausted and sweaty and my dog is on a wood eating kick apparently cause he keeps throwing up wood, all there is is wood and water. But ya they did another pg test and the urine didnt even need to drop onto the text before it turned positive. I think the fumes would have been good enough haha. So thats a good thing!

I was just looking up this thread to ask you how your appointment went. Sorry to hear about no u/s. That sucks. At least you'll get to see baby next week! Smile

Look on the bright side...next week you'll get an even better pic. But odd that she would leave knowing you're there with an appt.

Sorry about your dog. Sad

Well next week I will be going to the other office, the one in which I will be going to all the time. I just went to the appointment today at the futher away office because i am impatient an wanted to see my babes. But I did get my inurance verification delt with so atleast I accomplished something. So next thursday it is at 2:30. I see my psychiatrist right before that at 1:30 and luckily they are about a block from eachother. Btw is anyones sciatica bothering them? I usually get it on the right side bc I have a herniated disc from an ex throwing me out of a car ( oh ya I used to pick winners) but now since Ifound out I was prego my left leg is constantly cramped up.

*lurker*

Like everyone else said, every OB is different. My 1st appt consists of peeing in a cup, having blood pressure taken, a pap smear and breast exam (because it's always been a year since I've done that whenever I get pregnant). She sent me for an U/S a few days later just to make sure I was where I said I was. She gave me paperwork for bloodwork as they don't draw it there in the office. Seven weeks is definitely too early to hear the HB on a doppler... the only way would be via U/S. Good luck!
