Baby Amelia is here!!

Welcome Amelia Pauline Grow!! Born December 10th at 7:22am. She is 5 lbs 8 oz and 17 inches long. She's doing really well, even breathing on her own, but they have her hooked up because her lungs are underdeveloped still. I made it to 32 weeks, 4 days before I went into labor!

Contractions started a couple days ago, but came and went. Last night they started to become regular and painful at around 7pm. I was able to go to sleep with the help of some Ambien and Vicodin, but I woke up at 3 am with EXTREMELY painful contractions... At around 6am, I had some bloody show, so the doctor checked me and I was dialated to 2cm and 80% effaced. Since baby was still breech, they took me right in to deliver via c-section.

I'm already producing colostrum!!!

That makes me really excited, because I didn't produce any while pumping with Sophia until a couple days after I had her. This time, I got some the FIRST time pumping!

It's only a few drops each time I pump, but they said they'd put a little on their finger for Amelia to feed her if I could produce some. Not bad for a c-section at 32 weeks! Maybe I won't have the supply issues I had with Sophia!

It makes me feel really good to know I'm able to care for my baby somehow even though I can't feed her or change her diapers or hold her yet.

That is a great size for 32 weeks. Keep us posted on how you both are doing!! Did they give you any idea how long she might have to stay in the NICU?

Amanda- No, I think we might wait to introduce her to Sophia until she's doing a little better. We also want to get back into a routine with her before we bring her into NICU, because she's been acting out a little and at very random times. I think she's having some feelings that her little two year old mind doesn't really know how to handle since Mommy hasn't been able to hold her for a few weeks and she's been staying with Grandma and Grandpa. I have been able to let her climb up on my bed, but she's had to be really careful around my stomach. Sad

We're worried about her having one of her tantrums in the NICU and disturbing the other babies that need a relaxed environment.

I'm not sure they'd let her in yet, too. She was due for her two year appointment and her shots on the 25th and no one else will take her, so I've had to wait until I got out of the hospital. My mom draws the line at taking her in for shots and my husband has to work during the day. They won't let them into NICU unless they're up to date on all their shots. She's only a little over a couple weeks past due, but I'd imagine they'd be pretty rigid on that with all the babies with low immune systems.

Tiffany- They said she'd be in there for a minimum of 4 weeks and probably no longer than 2 months. Sometimes they have to stay in until their due date, which for Amelia would be Jan 31st. She's doing so well, I think she'll probably be out in 4 weeks! Everytime we go in, her vitals are better and she's only a day old! She's my little survivor, so I expected her to kick butt in NICU. Smile They've even had to start swaddling her because she likes to try to pull out her wires. LOL It totally matches up with how her personality's been even in the womb. Wink

Update- Last evening I got to go in and hold her for about an hour! It was really incredible, because a nurse was telling me about how they promote kangaroo care because it can stabilize their temps, their heart rate, and help brain development. Her respiratory rate has been much higher than they'd like (hers has been 100-110 and they want it below 60). She's not able to do kangaroo care yet, but as soon as I held her and started talking to her (I talk to my babies like crazy, lol. Yes, I had a conversation with her for the whole hour Wink ) her RR leveled out to 45-60!!!

It was AMAZING! She didn't fluctuate like that through the day, only when I held her and talked to her. She was mimicking my breathing. I felt so good after being able to hold her too. I thought I'd be really sad leaving her after holding her, but it just made me so happy to spend time with my baby. Smile

Congratulations and WTTW little Amelia! I am so impressed with her stats for a 32 weeker! How amazing about the colostrum too! We also had supply issues at first and it was so stressful, you deserve such an awesome break from all of that.

Wow that is great you got to hold her and when you started talking to her, her RR rates went to 45-60 what a special moment for the two of you.

:lurk:

Congratulations and WWTW baby girl!! Smile Sounds like she is doing wonderfully and just needs some time to grow and develop. My DS1 was born at 33 wks 4 days due to PROM; he was 4 lbs 12 oz at birth although he was a long 18.5". She is a great size! Keep up the pumping every 2 to 3 hrs around the clock and I'm sure you'll be producing more than she needs in no time. It's nice to have a freezer supply for later on. I'm glad they are promoting kangaroo care too. I hope her time in the NICU passes quickly. I found it to be a blessing that my DS was so healthy and just needed to grow and learn how to eat but it's still hard with the restrictions on when you can hold them and do their care and just not having them home with you. It can still make a mama really sad at times, especially with all the hormones to deal with too. The NICU is a tough road no matter the circumstances. Grow baby grow and get home soon! Smile

Yup, I've been doing kangaroo care twice a day with her, 1-1 1/2 hour sessions. She LOVES them. She just passes out and gets into that really good, brain developing REM sleep. Smile I think I'll only be able to do once a day for a while now, though, because I'm dependent on other people for rides for about a week.

Once I can drive myself, I can go back to twice a day because the hospital has a little daycare center that Sophia happens to LOVE. lol I dropped her off yesterday so my Mom could come see Amelia with me, all nervous because I thought she'd start freaking out. When I said "Bye, baby", she just looks at me and goes back to playing. Blum 3 My little girl is getting big.

Amelia is off her C-PAP and they're seeing if she can regulate her own temperature! They tested it last night, if she did well they'll be able to move her to a crib! She's still eating through a tube in her nose, but they feed her a little through the syringe too. My breastmilk supply seems to be doing really well!! Yesterday was day 4 and I pumped 1 1/4oz through the day!! This morning I pumped 3/4 oz JUST in my morning pumping! I'm super excited about this, as I was BARELY producing colostrum on day 4 with Sophia.

I'm going to try to make it to an infant massage class I signed up for at NICU this Monday. We'll see if my pain is low enough that I can go without narcotic pain meds long enough to drive myself there and back for it.

I'm getting discharged today! I have mixed feelings, because I don't want to leave my baby.. It's hard to leave the hospital without your LO. Sad But on the other hand, I haven't stepped outside this hospital in nearly a month and I'll be able to go home to my other baby, who I haven't been able to care for in a month.

:lurk: Cindy! Congratulations on your beautiful baby girl! She's adorable and I know you can't wait to have *both* your little ones home and settled into more of a routine. I hope that is able to happen quickly for all of you. Smile

For now, I'm certain that Sophia will love having mommy closer to cuddle. I know you both have missed that!

Wishing you a smooth healing process and Amelia to continually improve and strengthen!

TFS!
