This is what I understand...
When the membranes rupture this early they have to balance the need to keep away infection with the need for the baby to develop a little more. She is on antibiotics to hopefully stave off infection. Plus the steroids can make a big difference and this gives them some time to work. This condition is more common with twins pregnancies... so I read a lot on it earlier in my pregnancy.
The other thing about water breaking is that sometimes it's a small enough break that they can keep you on hospital bed rest and let the pregnancy progress though as Tiffany said, it's a matter of weighing the risk of possible infection with the ability to bake longer.
Hoping everything is going as smoothly as possible and you're both doing well Cindy!
Things are getting boring, which is really good. My sugars went a little haywire after the steroid shots, but they're leveling out now. No contractions and baby is looking great.
Like Tiffany said, they have me on a TON of antibiotics to hold off infection. No infection so far. I'm continuing to produce and leak lots of fluids, so it was a big break, but I guess as long as you don't go into labor and you don't get an infection, they like to keep baby in for as long as possible.
I guess there are some women who can stay for months with their water broken. :/
Since I went past 3 days without starting labor, I guess it's a big milestone and it looks good as far as my not going into labor anytime soon. They still have to monitor baby and me a whole lot, but I might just be able to stay here and keep baby in for a few weeks. Here's to crossing our fingers on that!
I spoke with one of my doctors the other day and she said if I'm still pregnant at 34 weeks, they'll come in and talk to me about delivering. 34 weeks is a good place to be as far as premies go. The neonatologist came in yesterday and told that even if my baby was born NOW, she'd have a 99% chance of survival, which was really comforting to me.
Anyway. I'm in the hospital to stay until baby comes. I'll keep everyone posted as things come up, but hopefully it stays really boring for me for a really long time!
I'm SO glad things went so well! I agree that getting past three days with no more labor is a fantastic milestone! I hope you're one of the ones they're able to keep cooking until 34 weeks! I know it will be extremely trying being on rest and away from your oldest daughter for so long despite the obvious health benefits to your youngest.
Thanks for the update, we're rooting for you and your little lady!
