Babies and doctors - how often?

Just curious....and I know this is a stupid question..

How often do you usually take a baby to the doctor? Our family GP will take the baby on, but the problem is our GP is an hour drive from our house. We LOVE her though. We got set up with her when we lived in a different city but have since moved and bought a house an hour away in a new city.

During the first year it will be ok because if I need to take baby to the doctor I will be on mat leave and home. But after that...do they see the doc for checkup every 6 months? Every year?

Am I crazy for keeping with this GP? She's just so awesome though. But I hate the drive, it's so long and frustrating if I hit any traffic.

There are doctors near us accepting new patients. I could always have a different doctor for the baby, but that might be confusing.

I know I need to make this decision soon too....I will need to have a doctor set up for when the baby is born....

Here we go quite often, every 3 mo. for the 1st 15 or 18 mo. then it becomes yearly when they change ages (2,3,4, etc). But that is U.S.A. I'm guessing it would be similar up there b/c they are still getting vaccinations and checkups, which is what every one of those appts are for.

I'd keep your awesome Dr. just plan on the drive. its hard to find awesome Drs.

we are expected to take baby in at 2 weeks, 2 months, 4 moths, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months 18 months, 2 yrs and then yearly. plus you take baby in when baby is sick. Some Drs dont always make you keep all the appointments for a repeat parent ... especially if you don't vaccinate on schedule. its nice to make sure baby is keeping up developmentally, but i'm just annoyed by dragging all my kids in so they can say "baby is fine but needs these shots" and i say " no shots" and we go home. plus we have WIC and baby gets measured at least every 6 months there anyway...

Ditto Jenni on the dates. Not sure if it's the same in Canada.

My kids (one or the other) are sick so often that we're at the doctor's every month or two anyway. I think we actually haven't been in since DD2's 18m appt, and it feels like forever even though it's been less than 6 months. :biglaugh:

I'd stick with the doctor you like, especially since you will have that first year off. Beyond one year, you're only taking them in every 3-6 months, so it would be doable.

I think we took Ellie to the Dr every month for the first YEAR.. at least! then i lost faith in western medicine and we don't go unless they are REALLY sick or for a yearly checkup. i'd rather NOT take this baby in unless i have to, even for check ups, because once we took Ellie in and they had a 2 yr old with shingles... like we'd be exposed to that anywhere else.....

For Canada the schedule is 2 weeks, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months 18 months, 2 yrs and then yearly. But I had a preemie so lots more appointments and it had to be a paed for 2 years. Vaccinations are done by the public health nurses and in Alberta we saw them 5 times before 1 year, they also would do weight checks when you drop in.

Wow. Seems like so many visits!

The problem is, we only have one car. To take the baby to the doctor it means I have to get up early, drag baby into the car, drive DH to work, and stay out the entire day as the doctors off is close to DH's work. It wouldn't make sense for me to drive the hour home, then put baby back in the car, drive the hour back to pick up DH after work, then drive another hour home.

It might be easier to find a local doc that I can just bus to near by....

seems good until you dont like the new dr, they harass you for your parenting choices, and you dread going..... but good luck!

Hopefully that won't happen!

Rachael, do you know any moms locally who could recommend a good doc? You can set up a time with docs even before the baby is born to meet them, ask any questions ("how do you feel about delayed vaccinations? how many other docs are in the practice? what kind of after hours clinic do you have?" etc).

Nothing is more telling than how they interact with your kid, but meeting them in person (rather than relying on an online description) can give you a pretty good feel for their personality and if they'll mesh well with your intended parenting style.

That sounds like way too much driving to me! I would spend some time looking for a great doc locally. My little guy was a car seat screamer and every minute in the car seamed like an hour... Also, if your kid gets sick often you might be there a lot more than just regular checkups. I second the recommendation about asking other moms. Also, I always check rateMD for reviews. And maybe the new doctor will take you and your husband too - that way none of you have tp drive that far.

Good luck!
