My favorite tradition is elf stockings. Each of the boys has a special stocking and I will take each one (by the self for some special mommy time) to buy gifts for kids whose mommies and daddies can't get them presents. Then we hang the stockings and put out some cookies and santas elves come and take the presents to the other families. The elves always leave a note to say thank you.
That's a really cute idea!
I love decorating the Christmas tree together as a family. It's fun hearing some of the stories behind DH's old ornaments, too, as we put them up.
There are some traditions I remember from when I was a kid that I just haven't really started with my kids, but I still want to. Guess I should do that sooner rather than later, right?
DD1 reminded me of one today. There's a subdivision near here that goes all out on the decorating/lights (and they pick a different charity each year for whatever donations they get from the people who drive through), so each year in the week before Christmas, we go get ice cream/shakes and drive through the subdivision to look at the lights.
Hmmm....traditions. Let me see.
My own traditions are that each of us get a stocking. Mostly stuffed with little things like hand creams or fun toiletries and some candies/chocolate. This is something I did since I was a kid and DH is finally getting the hang of making one for me!
On my side we don't open Christmas presents until the morning and we have to have breakfast first (I know, weird). But on DH's side of the family they open presents after midnight which I find very odd.
I probably have more but my brain is mush lately so I can't think of any at this time!
We have a similar one... We open one the night before (pjs, a book and fun snack) then morning of we do stockings (funny little toys, small sweets and a chocolate orange in the toe) then breakfast before presents (usually grandparents show up around breakfast). My Dh's family and I differ on the present opening stuff... My family does it one at a time (so you can watch other people open your gifts)... His family is more tornado like. So in our home, if there is a specific name on the from tag you let that person know otherwise the ones from Santa are free game.
it seems like all the traditions i had as a kid have changed drastically since i grew up!
we used to have a very routine christmas- on x-mas eve we went to my dad's parents house, opened lavish ammounts of gifts with many cousins and had a nice dinner. then x-mas morning we had what santa brought to our house, usually we all got up early but dad would make us wait FOREVER while he made coffee and breakfast and THEN he'd let us start opening gifts. i remember we had to tell my sister that if she woke anyone up before 6 am they were taking all her presents back. so she woke me up at 5:30 and we sat by the tree together before making lots of noise at 6 am (pretending we were trying to make coffee lol) and then around 1 pm we finally got dressed and went to my mom's parents for more lavish gifts.
my dad's mom died last year, hadn't been well for a very long time, and we're all grown up and moving far apart
the only thing i hold onto is that on christmas morning we have toaster strudle for breakfast! love that stuff LOL
