5 Point or Seatbelt
Well, recently Lexi discovered that her little friend is in a high back booster and wears a seat belt. Lexi's combo booster has a 5-point harness for up to 40 pounds. Lexi wants to wear a seatbelt in her booster instead.
Now, the booster will accomodate her at 35 pounds with the seatbelt but I am hesitant to switch her. Right now the "deal" is that when we go to daycare (a less than 2 minute car ride) she can wear her seatbelt but if we go any further she has to be in her 5-point. So far this seems to work for her. What are your thoughts????
I'm also considering getting her a high back booster seat w/o the 5-point because Zayne shouldn't be in his car seat due to his massive weight, chunk is 30 pounds already, and I might switch him to Lexi's 5-point.
We've been using the booster seat for quite some time now. She was unfastening the regular car seat and was over 40 lbs. so I switched her out.
From everything I've read she should be in her 5 point until she reaches the max height weight for her seat and shouldnt be in a regular booster unless the seatbelt fits properly. This is also coming from the overly cautious mom who still has Austin RF and would have had Russ RF till atleast 2 if it wouldnt have been for his daddy.
I'm pretty sure they have to be in the five-point harness here until 4 years old.
See Lexi's pedi said that she could be in a high back booster with a seatbelt (actually the conversation was "She's still in a booster seat and wearing a seatbelt correct?" me, "Actually she's still in a 5-point" doc, "Oh well, that's good, as long as she's within the hight and weight for the seat that's fine"

The laws do vary by state. This is the law for Pennsylvania:
Children under the age of four (4) must be buckled into a federally-approved child passenger restraint system
(child safety seat), which must be secured to the vehicle by the seat belt system (or using the vehicle’s LATCH
system, available in newer vehicles), no matter where they ride in the vehicle (front or back seat).
• Children ages four (4) and older, but under the age of eight (8) must be buckled into a federally-approved child
booster seat, which must be secured to the vehicle by the seat belt system, no matter where they ride in a
vehicle (front or back seat). Booster seats must be used in conjunction with lap and shoulder belts.
• Children ages eight (8) and older, but under age 18 must be buckled in a seat belt, no matter where they ride
in the vehicle (front or back seat).
• Drivers are responsible for securing children into an approved child passenger restraint system and ensuring
children under age 18 are buckled up.
I guess that means that Braden could technically give up the booster seat next month!
Everett falls asleep in the car too often to get him out of the 5point. I will keep him in it as long as possible just for comfort and safety. Good luck making your decision!
I dont know what our exact laws are...
But I would be keeping Liam in a 5 point harness...they are much safer and secure...
Im not a HUGE stickler for carseat rules, as Ive turned both boys to front facing at 1...But when its something as simple as harness of seatbelt...I would definitely choose harness...
I always think when it comes to car accidents..."It not me I have to worry about on the road, its the other idiots on the roads we have to watch out for" So no matter how safe I think my driving is...there are idiots out there that drive crazy and fast etc...Always puts things back into perspective for me...Safety first...
DF and i had this conversation after coming upon a car accident the other day. A 14 and 3 year old were ejected from the car due to faulty seat belts. Had the 3 year old still been in the 5 pt harness she wouldnt have been flown to the childrens hospital..... we both decided that she will stay in the 5 pt until the carseat wont allow it and our seat goes to 80 lbs 5 pt and 100 lbs booster. The seat i have at the sitters only goes to 40 lbs..... not sure what to do there. i may have to go buy another seat :(
Over here there are actually fines for using an incorrect restraint. They have to be in a 5 point harness until 40lbs or 4 years old, whichever comes FIRST. This is because the mechanism in a normal seatbelt is not activated on impact when the passenger is under 40lbs.
Tegan is in a combi seat also but she's only 23lbs and I can see her being in the harness forever basically
