HELP! Diaper Rash

Dalton's bum is as red as a tomato from the diarrhea he's getting because of his antibiotics. I know some of you have been through this before. I tried a zinc cream and he screamed for 10 minutes. I did aquaphor but it doesn't fix anything. I put the stuff the hospital gave me (aloe vesta) and he seemed less upset and I think it may have healing properties.

What have you used in the past that worked or didn't work. I hate to reinvent the wheel.

Bordeaux Buttpaste, nothing else ever touches maddisons rash, also just plain corn starch in the diaper helps, baking soda in the bath. Those are our tricks. also when I use Zinc cream I dont rub it, I just squirt it all over her and let the diaper do the rest, of course thats not as economical with a newborn.

When they get really bad I give the kids a bath after every poop and (as gross as it sounds) I don't use wipes I just sitck them right in the tub. Yes, it means cleaning the tub 5+ times a day but it really seems to help. After the bath it's Bordeaux Buttpaste OR if you're brave, let him sit without a diaper for a little while to air it out.

Good luck! I hope it gets better!

couple things that have worked for us:
Balmex diaper rash cream
California Baby diaper rash cream

I used to let stephen just lay on a blankey diaper less for a while when it was really bad!

Which antibiotic is he on?

We have had this issue way too many times too and I agree that bath and no wipes helps, as does letting him air it out. We sometimes put Aveeno Baby Soothing Bath Treatment in the bath and that seems to help. If we aren't able to bathe, I use paper towel or super cheap wash cloths that I throw away with warm water. I use TONS of cream and have used every kind out there I feel like and I swear sometimes one works better than the other, but it just depends! I also get "butt paste" prescribed by my pedi and that can really help, although sometimes more than other times. Sadly, sometimes time is the only thing that really helps too. Oh, and when it was antibiotic related, the docs had him take culturelle in his drink, but he was 1 so not sure if you can do that with a newborn.
Good luck!

If nothing usual works, have them check for a yeast infection. They're commonly mistaken for diaper rash, even for boys, which can be caused from antibiotics. You can try OTC Lotrimin first to see if that does the trick, otherwise you can ask for an Rx. Hope he feels better soon!

He's on omnicef this time. . .which I will request we don't do again. He didn't have any trouble with ammox. It's not yeast (that's the only kind of infection EJ ever had and we had monster yeast infections).

Poor guy Sad

We just discovered oatmeal baths. They work really well for fairly mild diaper rashes. It's very soothing and DS loves them. Just let him soak for about 15 minutes if he'll tolerate that long. http://babyparenting.about.com/cs/healthissues/a/oatmealbath.htm

My ped recommended calmoseptine. That also works awesome!!! be warned though - it's crazy sticky. Only use on disposables. It will ruin cloth diapers.

Omnicef is what we ask for, amox does not help Jr's ear infections. We have no poop problems with it. Augmenton tears him up. Awful rash and poops. We got yeast from that one. Hope he feels better soon!!! Poor boy
