toddler disrespect

Everett is going through a phase (I hope) where he is very very rude to me. His constant phrases are "mommy, you are being mean" "you aren't nice to me" "I don't like you mommy" He will say these things while I am doing something for him, like getting him a drink or food, or taking him someplace fun. I'm not sure he understands what he's saying, but it was terribly embarassing when he said those things during Dalton's birthday party (while I was getting him his food). I don't know really what to do, because if I punish him for saying it, then I do become mean. I put him in time out and we had a discussion about how when he says unkind things it makes me sad and that I do lots of things for him because I love him. I told him that if he says anything like that to me again he will get more time outs. I REALLY hope this stage is shortlived. I think the only reason I haven't heard "I hate you" is because we don't use the word hate.

Please tell me somebody else is going through this or has gone through it, and how did you handle it besides riding it out.

It didn't occur to me what a problem was until people reacted to him saying it during the party.

Savannah does that too - I just throw it back at her and ask her why, and ask if I hurt her feelings b/c I wasn't trying to be mean - that is a serious curve ball for her - sometimes she says, "sorry." and keeps it moving.

Lexi does this too. She says things like "mom you need to settle down " when I'm telling her to get dressed. "Mom you're crazy " when I tell her to pick up. And "I don't like you " when we're cuddling. For the most part I ignore her but when she says "I don't like you " I tell her "well I love you but if you don't like me then you have to get off my lap " I hope its just a phase but worry because this morning Zayne said "mommy you're stupid "

Russ does the same thing. This morning I lost track of how many times Russ said "I Hate you". I usually tell him that I still love him but since this seems to get progressively worse with him I've started telling him that when he is ready to treat mommy nicely then I will talk to him other wise he can sit in his room. This morning I just ignored him though. Usually when I call him out on it he apologizes. He knows what he is saying is wrong because if anyone else says hate, stupid etc he corrects them.

Everett is continuing to push the limits with the way he speaks to me. One of my coworkers told me she sprayed her son with vinegar when he did that so I bought a spray bottle and gave it a try. He's only been sprayed one time. She said now that her son is older 6-7 years old he gets to drink a spoonful of vinegar when he mouths off. . .doesn't happen often. Seems harmless but makes a point. I was really afraid that Everett would smell like he was being pickled as soon as we started it, but one spray did the trick.
