What a looooong weekend that was...

A few of you may have seen my fb status over the weekend...but for those of you that didnt...

I took Charlie to the Drs Friday morn as he had a high temp for a couple of days and a few nights of not sleeping AT ALL....

Leading up to this, he had had a cold, basically just a snotty nose for 3weeks...Just when I thought that was all cleared up (We had gone a day without having to wipe it) He then was up all night with a temp and snotty nose AGAIN, that was Wed night...then we had Thursday with a high temp abit bit glassy eyed and lithargic and up all night again...

Friday morning I took him to the Dr's, I almost wasnt going to because he wasnt looking too bad at all and I was sooooo tired...but thought I had better just incase as I didnt want to have to pay to go to the Dr over the weekend...
Just as well I did, because while we were waiting to see the Dr, he slumped BIG TIME...floppy and lithargic...And silent, which is far worse than a screaming unhappy baby...

The Dr couldnt find any reason for him to have such a high temp so sent me to the hospital with him for more tests, as he showed a couple of signs of meningitis and she was also worried it could be pneumonia

So I was lucky enough to find my sister picking up her daughter from Kindy on my way home to quickly grab a bottle for Charlie, So I dumped Liam on her... I knew we were going to be at hosp for a while and thats no place for a 2 1/2yr old...I got the bottle as I knew I was going to need something to settle him after all the needles etc...

So anyway...Poor wee Charlie Bear had an IV put in straight away (I cried my little heart out, it took 3 of us to hold him down while they put the IV in and took bloods etc) they then hooked him up to fluids straight away as he was de-hydrated...
He had x-rays to check for pneumonia, they came back clear...
He had a catheter put in to get a urine sample to check for infection, another crying mummy moment while we held him down...that came back clear too...
Bloods came back that he had a bacterial infection, so they gave him IV antib's...
And they said he had slight ear infections, chest infection and his throat wasnt looking too good...

He was such a good boy while we were in there, hardly ever complained, other than when we were poking needles into him etc...But considering we were there for 5hrs and he hadnt slept all day he was soooooo good...he actually found the bandage around his hand to hold the IV in so he didnt rip it out, very amusing...Im soooo bummed out I didnt even have my phone on me to take a photo of him in there, for his album...:( I was in such a rush I left it on the bench at home...

When I got home Andy said he just knew I was in hosp (I wasnt able to contact him to let him know) because when he got home the house was upside down like it was the day he came home to find us gone and in hosp with Liam and his scary episode...I couldnt contact him that day either...

We have had to stop the Anti b's as he was allergic to them...So I was back at the Dr yesterday and he seems well....My Dr explained soooo much more to me than the A & E Dr did (I spose they are strapped for time and dont go into as much detail) But my Dr explained what everything ment with the blood works and told me he had very high readings of Protein and white blood cells and one more I cant remember...So hence why they were so quick to get fluids and anti b's into him...

Anyway I have my happy wee boy back again now...And we are all much more rested and happy

Its traumatized me too Amy...it was the firsthing that came to mind when he took a turn...By the time we got to the hospital Charlies limbs were yellow, the blood had already started heading toward the vital organs, which was the beginnings of Liams...I was just so thankful I was at the hospital already...

So glad he's feeling better! Was Liam about the same age when he had his episode? I'm with Amy...it still crosses my mind from time to time when the kids get sick, even though they are much older now.

OMG, how scary! Did they figure out what it was? Did they rule out meningitis? What caused his arms to turn yellow? It's so hard to feel so helpless. I hope that you never have to experience that again! I don't know where I was, but I totally missed what happened to Liam. Was it the same thing?

Tracy heres whats happened to Liam...I posted this on my July board...

Liams story went like this...he had a febrile convulsion (I didnt know that at the time obviously)...
We were at home, he had been off for a few days but nothing major...his temp was high-ish...he was clingy and glassy eyed, all normal with a temp...
But he started to become lithargic...this next lot of stuff happened in the course of about 15mins in total....
I lay him on the floor to change his nappy, I noticed his eyes were fixated and not even looking at me, just through me...I knew something was wrong, gut feeling...tried to get hold of my MIL to get her to come around and check him too...took 3 phone calls to get her, by the time I was talking to her, around his mouth was starting to look pale, at which stage when she answered her phone, I just said..."somethings wrong with Liam" and she knew by the sound in my voice it was serious...she only lives about 2mins away, she was there within 1min...she took one look at Liam who had gone limp and started look blue...and said get in the car...

We just bolted...he was on my lap...I was shaking him and blowing on his face trying to keep him with us...he was completely floppy...The hospital is only a 1min drive from my house...and we were there in under that, she was speeding hard out...we drove straight into the emergency bay and ran in the door, with Liam who was naked bar his nappy...Ive never seen people move so fast...the waiting room parted like the sea...and the doors were buzzed straight open and dr's ran from all directions....

It was the most terrifying moment of my life...Im in tears now just thinking about it again...*deep breath*
All I remember is being on my knees next to the bed crying and holding his hand as the dr did what he had too...I remember looking at my MIL face and she was just pale too...

But fortunately it was a febrile convulsion, which is, now Ive found out, can be common...
its when the body temp spikes so fast that the body shuts down and the blood rushes to the vital organs to protect them...

And before I knew it (about 5mins) colour started to come back into him...by about 30mins later he was looking heaps better...
And a couple of hours later after a little nap he was moving around...
They kept us in over night just to keep an eye on him...

It turned out he had a bacterial infection and that was what caused the high temp and general unwellness...
Yes they ruled out meningitis after the blood tests and other physical tests...
The yellow limbs was the blood rushing to the organs...

Holy Schmoly, how scary! I've never heard of febrile convulsions to be common. The title in itself sounds wicked! I so would've reacted the same way as you even knowing that's a possibility as one may never know for sure with the symptoms you gave. I'm glad that it was something very short-term. So was Liam's convulsions caused from a bacterial infection as well? Otherwise what prompts them to occur? When do they outgrow this possibility?

Liam pretty much just had a cold, well thats what I saw leading up to it...They told me in hosp that he had a respiratory infection, it must be viral, cos I didnt have to give him anti b's....

The Dr told me that around the age of 4 is when they usually grow out of it, obviously the body can cope better by that age...
They just told me to be aware when he had a fever that it may happen again...
Hes had high temps since, but hes never got to the glassy eyed lithargic and floppy stage again...
I would prefer to not have to see it happen ever again, it really sucked...

The only thing that makes them occur is a sudden temp rise...a spike as the dr told me...its not the actual temp reading as such...its more how fast it goes up...its just the bodies defence mechanism...

But I tell ya when you see your baby blue and floppy eyes rolled back...you hit panic station pretty fast...I would honestly say its the scariest moment in my life to date...
