Gun violence petition

I just wanted to share a site I just visited regarding the tragedy at the Sandy Hook School. My Rabbi doesn't often share her feelings one way or another politically but I think most people feel that assault rifles need to be banned to the general public. No one needs to have a gun that shoots that many bullets that quickly. Anyway this site has a petition that is being sent to the White House and I wanted to let everyone know about it. If you have a moment, take a look and if you feel the same as I do please add your name to the list.

End Gun Violence Now

Barring people from legally purchasing any weapon is not effective, as criminals can always get their hands on what they want. It is important to know that Assault Riffles are banned in the state of Connecticut already, and that did not stop this attack.

If people weren`t able to buy them they wouldn`t as easily accessible for criminals to get their hands on, or in this case a KID! Obviously there`s a serious gun problem in the US, so if we can do anything to improve it at all, why wouldn`t you try.

My understanding is he did attempt to buy a weapon but was refused. If mom hadn't had a cabinet full of them with hundreds of rounds of ammo then this could have been avoided.

And how do you think terrorists get their guns. There is a black market for everything. The mother purchased the guns legally the child stole them illegally. And he killed her for them, if he was willing to kill his own mother who is to say he wouldn't have walked up to the nearest Military armory and kill the guard? Or build an explosive, or grab a steak knife. There ARE bad people in the world who will do bad things in bad ways, because they have no respect for laws or human life. Taking guns out of the hands if law abiding citizens will not stop evil criminals, it gives them added opportunities. These mass shootings keep happening at places where it is illegal to carry weapons, whether you carry legally (as I do with my conceal and carry permit) or illegally, so obviously there is no regard for the law. The average loss of life when stopped a police officer in a mass shooting is 18.5 people, when stopped by an armed citizen it is 2.2. Police response time in the US is up, every second wasted with waiting for them is another possible life killed. However if even just the principal had one twelve gauge shot gun and knew how to use it all of those children would still be alive. This should not be an issue of more gun control, it should be an issue of protecting the most valuable thing in your life. There are armed guards at banks and they are protecting PAPER, why wouldn't you want the same level if not higher for your child.

And I could go into the actual reason for the second amendment. Protecting us from the government. We are not an infallible nation. We are just as susceptible to tyrannical leaders that we see around the world and try to fight and those of the past. Protecting my family with a tiny Glock hand gun vs. a fully automatic whatever the military chooses to use, it wouldn't work. It didn't work for the Jews when Hitler took over Europe. I pray that I never see the day where the great land that we live in falls into the hands of Evil, but you can be damn sure if I am here I will be fighting it. I am not looking to hurt people or go against my government. This is the reason why the legal purchase of any fire arm is needed, and it says so right in the 2nd amendment . And even still if it is not government tyranny, there are still many reasons a semi-automatic weapon would be a completely valid purchase and for me to have in my home. If a riot occurred, I live near the center of a city that has many people, if I had to protect my family, if we had to flee our home, how would we do so with out proper protection? Or what if, God forbid, we were invaded!?! There are plenty of other countries that dislikes us, that have access to weapons and the means to do it, I will stand for my country.

I am not some crazy anxiety ridden person, I have just thought it through. You may not want a gun in your home and I totally support you, but if we are walking through a mall and a person with a gun or a knife comes at you, I will gladly try my best to protect you and myself and the children and any other innocent person standing anywhere near the line of danger. If someone is coming at me I will not hesitate to empty my gun on them. I am not afraid to die, but I will not do it before my time. My mother asked me when I told her I was getting a gun and taking the conceal and carry classes "How do you know that you are not meant to die if someone attacks you?" I told her "If I die then I die, but there is nothing on this planet that will stop me from saving my son."

Taking rights away from good guys does nothing to prevent the bad guys.

Also the mother should have properly stored her guns. If the guns were kept in a safe that the gunman could not have accessed then at least this shooting with his mothers guns would not have happened. The mother knew her son was unstable, while she probably couldn't have predicted he was capable of such an atrocity, she should have at least known to keep dangerous items away from him. That was one of the first things we learned in conceal and carry class was to properly store and secure your weapons.

And I am sure no one read that whole post all the way through, and I am sorry that was so long, but if you can't tell by now this is something I feel strongly about.

This is not the debate board. This is our birth board that has been around for almost 10 years. Don't sign the petition. That's fine. No one asked you to. It seems you came here looking for an argument and we are not interested. Once again please take this to the debate board.

If you are signing a petition to take away my rights I think I should be able to have a say on it.

ETA: If I were posting petitions to ensure women's health rights, or petitions against religion there would be backlash I am certain. I am not looking to debate the issue of the God given rights that I have. I am merely telling why this petition and others like it are treasonous against the Constitution and what this country was founded on. If you can not handle other peoples opinions then posting such things in an open forum is wrong. And as you said this is a BIRTH BOARD and this petition has nothing to do with birth or children. If you feel so strongly against my (and other law abiding citizens) owning a gun that you feel the need to petition our government about it, THEN IT IS MY DUTY TO STAND UP AND FIGHT FOR MY RIGHT.
Also, just because you are not interested in hearing my opinion doesn't mean others aren't, or that others do not agree, or that someone isn't on the fence and may want to hear the opinion of a law abiding citizen for the continued legalization of guns.

FYI The petition is to ban assault rifles. It isn't a ban on owning guns.

Where do you draw the line though. If you are going to ban some? You know what was one of the first thing the **** party did when a country was taken over? Make citizens register guns, then they took away some of the guns, then some more, then no citizen was armed.

(ETA:OK I didn't know that I couldn't say the N word associated with Hitler.)

Personally, I don't want to hear your opinion. Like Sam said, this is our birth board and we've known each other for 10 years. I think you should take your opinion somewhere else too.

Oh, I am sorry. I didn't realize that pregnancy.org was THAT sort of board.

When you barge in on a birth board you have absolutely NO connection with, simply for the sake of debating this petition, it just makes you look like an ***. Take it to the debate board.

Thank you for posting this Samantha - I've signed it as well.

*Is this a closed group?*

I am sorry to try to have an adult civilized conversation with what I thought were other civilized adults. No one said they were posting it just to post it and not receive feed back. Resorting to name calling is beneath someone who claims to be 35.

Would anyone care to join me on the debate board on this topic. I want to hear your opinions, even if you don't want to hear mine.

Seriously, leave. Do you have a July 2003 child? Have you been friends with us for ten years? If you answered no, you have no place here. Take your arguments elsewhere.

We just had one of our mamas pass away. This is not welcome, especially right now!!!

I am going to clarify a few things since this was my thread:

Where do I draw the line on weapons? Assault weapons.

Conn. has a ban on assault weapons already? Can't be. The mom had all her guns legally and the guns he used were hers, therefore she got an assault weapon legally.

Is this a BIRTH board and does this thread apply? Yes it does. We have been together for 10 years and have seen many many different topics posted. We have gone beyond birthing babies. This thread was about trying to keep our children safer. And I noticed not one of the moms that is a member on this board objected and if they did it would have been respectfully. So if the members who have been here since day one don't have an issue with the thread then I can't see how anyone else should.

Is this a *closed board*. Nope. But it isn't a debate board.

Is preg.org THAT kind of site. I am not sure what you mean by that. It is a great place. We have made lifelong friends here. We try to be very supportive which is what this site is supposed to be about.

No disrespect but we are asking that if you want to debate gun ownership please go to the debate board. Not one person mentioned banning ALL gun ownership. That was you alone so there isn't anything to debate. We just want to keep people safer and those who signed think our kids will be safer without these military/assault type of weapons in the hands of civilians. That's all.

And for my lovely mommies. If anyone was offended in any way by my posting this petition I apologize. And I also want to thank those who signed.

And we missed you Carolyn!!

No, we don't want to hear you're opinion...we don't know you. We've known each other a long time, so if one of us wants to post something like this on OUR board, we have every right to do so. Yes, you have every right to your opinion, but it's not welcome here.
