Are 2nd labours shorter?

I don't know if we have discussed this before, but for btdt moms, were your 2nd (or later) labours shorter than your 1st? Did you go into labour earlier?

Just curious. And hoping lol!

My overall labors were not shorter (mine were actually longer because they were trying to stop labor). I can say that the pushing part was much shorter. The second and third baby only took about five to ten pushes while the first I was pushing for almost two hours.

I shouldn't have read that right before bed... I'll be dreaming of long labors! Sad

My first was 28 1/2 hours....with 2 1/2 hours of that being pushing.

I was induced with the other three.
They were all 8-10 hours with only 5 minutes or less of pushing.

So, I don't know if it was the inducement that made it faster...but the pushing was the biggest difference!

My warter broke at 39 weeks for Peter. It took 18 hours (first 9 at home) before labor contractions became painful, before that it was like strong BH every 12 min. But once labor started I went from 3cm-10cm in 6 hours, but then I did not feel like I ever had to push (he was high and a forhead OP presentation and not comming down) After being at 10 for an hour the OB had me push. I pushed for 3 hours and he got stuck under the pubic bone. We tried the vaccuum to turn him OA but after 3 contractions of that the OB said I needed a c-section and I was so tired after being up the all day monday and then my water braking 33 hours before. By time the c-section came around it was Wed am. Had I not been up for so long I may have had more strenght to push.

With Tessa I started to have contractions that I could time 10 min apart at 39 weeks and I was 4CM at my 40 week visit but no strong painful contractions so I just went on with my days. I wanted a VBAC so they would not induce to make them stronger and since my water was not broken and NST showed that she was healthy we just let her come in her own time. 41 weeks 1 day, I woke up and begged DH not to go to work but he did anyway. At 6am I felt my "first" strong contraction, I could not talk and I had to breath during it. I just sat there after and was like ok is that it or will we get more? Right at the 5 min mark I had another and by the 4th in a row I knew this was it. I had her at 9am (so 3 hours of active labor) Do you think I, was I in labor 2 weeks or 3 hours? Smile I pushed 30 min with her, and OMG I felt the need to push, I had never felt that with Peter he never got that low.

Heath was the same way. Strong contractions BH from 39 weeks that I could time (10-12 min apart), but nothing that stopped me from walking or talking so the days just went on. I even kept working. At 40 weeks I was 4cm with him as well. Same story at 41 weeks I had one strong contraction that woke me up at 6 and he was born in 4 hours. I pushed 15 min with him and he was by BIG baby.

I expect the same this time to have weeks of strong BH that change things but that it will go slow, and to have a fast delivery about a week late. So I don't get excited when I get checked and told I am ___cm because I walked around over a week at 4cm and contractions for my last 2 without a baby.

Had my water not broken with Peter I don't think he would have been a C-section baby as it broke and then took so long for contractions to start and he was not ready (or in position). My water broke with my first because I had an infection.

Let me tell you a late baby with a changing slow cervix is so nice when it makes the active part (painful) of labor short. I would go 2 weeks late every time if it ment a fast labor.

Mine was induction also.. haha, but I think my labor isn't the "norm" obviously.

I wasn't the norm either... I was induced, and it was 28 hours with 2.5 of pushing. Obviously, a little shorter this time around would be nice!!
My Mom had 4 kids, and her longest labour was 6 hours:eek:

My first was induced too, so I don't know what to expect this time. They started the induction at about 1 pm. I started contracting about 9:30pm and after pushing for 45 min he was born at 4:19 am. It wasn't a super long labor, however my contractions were right on top of each other. Not sure what to expect this time.

My first was a natural birth with no pain meds--was in labor about 20 hours & pushed for about an hour. Born at 38 weeks

Second one I went in for my 37 week ck up (which was on a Friday) & they stripped my membranes. My contractions started less than an hour afterwards. Contractions were not close together enough for me to go to hospital till Sunday & he was born that Monday morning at 3:09 a.m. So not sure how to calculate this one...LOL

Third child I went in at 6:00 a.m. for an induction at 38 weeks was put on pitocin drip at 6:30. Contractions started at 7 a.m. was checked & only 3cm 80 effaced. Got my eppy at 8:15 but after an hour it wore off Sad At 10:30 I was 10 cm. Started actually pushing at 11:10 & he was born at 11:18 a.m. So 4 hours worth of labor & 8 minutes of pushing.
He was my shortest birth Smile

My midwives have warned me that they do expect second births to be shorter, assuming no other factors. They have said it is also more common to have pre-labor contractions with later births too. My labor was exactly 9 hrs from literally the first contraction until baby was out. Since she was a posterior baby, there will also be a difference for me if she is not posterior this time (faster, easier).

Much Yahoo That's why I think my 2nd and 3rd came so fast and why it took me so long to feel like I was in active labor. Even at the end it felt nothing like the pain I had whit my posterior baby.

I was induced the first time around, and it was a 36ish hour labor, and they only gave me the epidural maybe 10 hours before I had her.

Second time, it was 12 hours from hospital admission at 4cm to birth. It probably would have been quicker but I got that epidural right after they got me in the room.

I don't even remember how long my third labor was. I want to say maybe 15 hours? No epidural, maybe I subconsciously blocked the labor from my mind, LOL. I do remember that pushing her out was the biggest relief EVER, and that I was up and about less than an hour later which was awesome!

I have had 2 fairly quick labours, I think the babies were both in a good position so i'm sure that helped. 2nd labour was shorter and so was pushing time. According to my antenatal card, the hospital recorded the "labour length" as 4 hours for DD1 and 3 hours for DD2. That is obviously period of established labour (ie. strong contractions).

DD1 started contractions (that seemed like the real thing) around 6am, went to hospital around 11am once they were painful and she was born at 2.27pm. Oh and this was spontaneous labour at 36.5 weeks.

DD2 was an induction (he only needed to break my waters to get it going luckily) - broke waters at 9am, painful contractions by 12pm and she was born at 3.00pm. I was 38.5 weeks.

my first labor was 23.5 hours and my second was 8 hours and i went from 6-10 cm in 30 mins. so definately a lot faster for me. babies position plays a HUGE role in how fast you labor though, amoungst other things. Smile
