1st appt Friday - not sure what to expect

Hi All. I emailed my dr's office yesterday saying I am 4 weeks along. I figured they might want to run some labs as I have had 2 m/c in the past year and just had a chemical pregnancy last month. They emailed and called right back and had me go in today for a blood test, and another one for Thursday and Friday is my 1st appt. What do you think we'll do at that appt? Just talk about the lab results? Isn't it too early for a u/s? I will be 4w4d on Friday. I really, really hope this bean sticks. What do they test for in the blood work, just hCG? What are betas? (I really should know this since I already have a child but I don't). DD's pregnancy was textbook normal. Since I have been diagnosed with "recurrent miscarriages" and I am 35, I assume I am getting the high-risk treatment. Thanks for the help/info in advance.

Yay for an early appointment! I don't know all the ins and outs of a first appointment, so someone else will have to tell you that part, but I can tell you from my RE experience a few things.

Betas are another name for an HCG test. They actually refer to it as a Beta HCG or BHCG. They'll be looking at your results from both today and Thursday to see if the numbers are increasing at a normal rate (my dr said 60%-100% increase is normal.)

They will probably also look at your Progesterone level, to make sure it is high enough to sustain a pg. That can sometimes be a cause of m/c, especially early ones.

They might also possibly test some of your other hormone levels, and your thyroid levels to make sure they are where they should be.

I doubt they'll do an u/s that early as they really wouldn't see anything. It is possible they might take a look just to see if your lining looks good and to see which ovary you o'd from. But, I'd bet that they wait a week or 2 to look.

Good luck! I hope you have a great 1st appointment and everything looks terrific! Smile

Previous poster said it well. I just want to add to stay positive! I had 2 back to back m/c's and went on to have 3 more healthy babies (hoping this one will be too!). I know how nerve wracking it is. Praying your bean sticks!
