False alarm - prodromal labor - having intermittent contractions

Hi Ladies. I woke up to pee at 3am and then had a big contraction. I fell back asleep but have been having contractions since then (I got up at 5:45am because I no longer was sleeping). I sent DD to preschool and DH to work since there is nothing really big happening. I sure hope this is it (and you'd think I would know since it's labor #2) but I am not totally sure. My mom is coming over this afternoon so we are going to do some walking and hopefully move things along. Come on baby!

UPDATE: So I went to L&D at 9:15pm last night as the contractions were picking up 3-4 min apart. The only thing that worried me was that it was not really uncomfortable at all. Turns out I am in prodromal labor, which essentially means the contractions were not doing anything for dialation. I was still 1cm dialated, 100% effaced and the baby was really high (and had been -1 on Tuesday). Apparently 2nd babies can engage and come out, etc. I got sent home at 11:30pm and took a sleeping pill since I didn't think I could sleep with the contractions. They hoped that would stop them but I am still having some. So it could be any day now, but it still might be awhile. This is worse than just waiting. I hope I will know when to really go to the hospital (when they are real contractions).

Hope you ladies are doing well!

Ooh, good luck and ELVs!!! I know what you mean about not being totally sure even though you've done it once before. I have to say, after my weeks of prodromal labor and going back and forth to the birth center, when the REAL thing hit, I knew right away. Although I still kept questioning it until it became very clear.

Good Luck! I was hoping it would be before now for me, but haven't even had any false alarms yet. I know I still have a couple weeks before my due date, but have already started walking more and even DTD, which wasn't as bad as I expected. This is worse than that 2 week wait to the two pink lines!

Sorry about the false alarm...I was afraid of that since I could have written your post 3 weeks ago, but was hoping it was it for you! It probably won't be long though. In my case, the baby's position was definitely part of the reason things didn't progress into real labor for so long. Can you tell if the baby is posterior? If you can feel feet/legs, the baby is at least partly posterior. In any case, knowing what I know now, I would try and spend a lot of time on your hands and knees over the next couple days to help the baby get into a better position. When I actually went into labor, I stopped having contractions for an entire hour when the baby flipped posterior during or after the car ride. A short time after I got on my hands and knees (my chest propped up on a birth ball and I rocked back and forth) it kicked back in and went really fast after that.

Oh, and I feel your pain with this being worse than just waiting! Don't go back to L&D until you feel something stronger than what you've been feeling. My midwife told me when I was in prodromal labor that I would know in my heart when it was the real thing, and she was right. Somehow I just knew, there was a certain level of urgency I hadn't felt before and the contractions felt different. I bet you will know, try not to stress too much about that, although I certainly stressed about it, I know it's hard not to. Try to stay busy and distract yourself! Good luck!

Thanks Maggie. What you wrote is helpful. I am not going back until I know it's real. I hope it's soon and I hope we don't have to drag DD with us in the middle of the night. It's so tiring having contractions all day. I hope I can sleep tonight as I will not be getting another sleeping pill. I did take a nap for about an hour today so I am hopeful tonight will go well. My due date is Wed so I figure it can't be later than 41 weeks. Yikes that seems so long but I guess it's only 11 days.
