Pica and smell cravings

This happened to me during my first pregnancy, and started up again a month or two ago. I don't have the desire to eat non-food items (pica) but I REALLY want to smell gasoline/garage fumes. Like it is an overwhelming urge. I don't do it because I know it is horrible for me and the baby, but sometimes even walking past a garage or being stopped at a gas station just makes me want to stop and inhale deeply like it is the smell of baking cookies or something like that! It hasn't been as bad this time. With DS, DH started padlocking the garage because I seriously could not stop myself from sticking my head in and inhaling when I walked by. So crazy, I know. I looked it up when I had it before, and I guess it is a form of pica, but for some reason I want to smell dangerous substances instead of eat them. Anyone else have weird pregnancy symptoms?

WOW! I heard of wanting to eat strange things....but not smell them... that is odd - but funny!

I guess it isn't all that uncommon, there are pregnant women who want to sniff fingernail polish or household cleaners as well. So weird. Not sure what causes it, but it's a real thing.

I had a friend who was like that with bleach when she was preggers. I think it is pretty common.

Someone in my centering class (shared midwife visits) mentioned this. She bought some safe aromatherapy scents (okay for pregnancy) and just smells them when she gets the urge to smell cleaning products, etc and claims it helps. I know she has lemon and lavender. Maybe that would help you too?

Ugh, the closer I get to my due date the worse this is getting! It seriously makes me have a hint of understanding for what addicts go through. I am almost irrational about it, and think things like "I just want to go sit in someone's garage that smells like gasoline for hours." I have NOT done this, but I have started sticking my head into our garage momentarily for a "hit" every once in a while. And our garage isn't really smelly/fumey enough, so it just makes me want to do it more instead of taking the edge off like I hope it will. DH may have to get out the padlock again Wink I should try sniffing some aromatherapy scents. I have some lavender essential oil I could smell when a big craving hits. It won't fix it, but maybe it will help, thanks for the suggestion.

I keep wanting to smell campfire or like charcoal burning on the grill, not as bad, but still not the greatest of things. I love with my scentsy on in the house because of it! They have one called Fireside which is pretty close to the campfire smell and seems to work OK for me.
