Just wondering how you feel about middle names. Do you like them to have a meaning (e.g., honoring a family member) or do you think they can be anything?
We're having some trouble narrowing down a girl's middle name. I guess I always thought the middle name should honor a family member. With our daughter we honored by MIL who passed five years ago by using her first name. My SILs have used my MIL's middle name for both of their girls. So, we don't want to use that name. My family has many issues and I do not want to name a girl, if we have a girl, after my family due to those issues. So, that leaves my middle name (Lynn) which was not after anyone and I've never really liked.
with DS we used my grandfather's middle name for his.
We don't have any names for a boy, for a girl I would really like the middle name Frieda. I'm not 100% crazy on the name, but it's my grandmothers name and i was very close to her. She was a very strong woman who has overcome a lot in her life and i think it would be a great honour to give a daughter that as part of her name. I havn't run this by DH at all as I don't think he will be thrilled with the name lol. I agree though, middle names are usually after family but they can be from anything.
My first has a middle name after my grandfather. (Jay) My second has a middle name after my FIL. (Hayes) If I have a daughter, her middle name will be both mine and my great grandmother's middle name. (Belle) If this one is a boy, I have no idea what the middle name will be since I do not have a relationship with my parents and I do not know my paternal side of the family.
My husbands middle name was a family surname. (Redden) I am considering doing something similar as an option.
I was just catching crap for this at work today. DH wanted to honor his dad who passed 2 years ago with the babies name. If it were a boy, we were going to name him Charles. Even though DH said it would be a middle name - he later changed his mind that it would have to be a first name. I didn't like that idea, but ...we got a girl anyway. DH's dad's middle name was Frances. Spelled just like that. So, DH wanted our little girl to have his dad's middle name. I do NOT like the name Frances, but I am totally on board with honoring his dad, so... her name will be Julie Frances. I hear so much crap about Frances being old school. It doesn't MATTER! It's honoring someone DH loved and respected. UGH I get so mad.
My middle name is Ryan. Even though it's "technically" a boys name, I've always loved my middle name. There are no other Ryan's in my family.. my mom said she just thought of it, like right before I was born...haha
It's hard, though, because there is such a strong connection to names and if one of you likes a name and the other doesn't, it's a pain!
Among my family/friends people don't necesarily use the middle name that way. Most just choose something that they like or sounds good with the first name. Don't feel pressured to use a family name if you don't have one that you really want to use. The name should be something that you like and is special to you. If that means coming up with something different then go for it!
Why not use Nicole as a middle name?
I don't have any particular feeling about middle names. We allowed our two adopted children to choose their own middle names. One of our boys has his dad's name as his middle name. Our oldest son has a first and middle name with no significance. Thomas has a first and middle name that have significance.
Deb ................. DH Norm
DS Caleb, 13 ...... DS Patrick, 12
DS Isaiah, 8 ......... DS Thomas, 7
DD Cherish, 6....... DD Emily, 7\18\13 ....... Ripple, 17
William, 14 weeks, 4/11/12
I like old fashioned!
I think you can go either way. Our son has DH's name as his first name, but we call him by his middle name which is not attached to a family member. He also has 2 middle names and the second is my maiden name (DH's middle name is his mother's maiden name)
For our little girl I want two middle names again and this time they represent family. Daniel for my uncle and Rose for his grandmother (actually, I just like the way Saylor Daniel Rose sounds, lol!)
