Christmas tree o' Christmas tree.....

What is everyone doing this year about your Christmas trees? Anyone worried about LOs toppling the tree or ornaments? Anyone planning on putting a gate around it? Any BTDT mamas with advice for us FTM with toddler years at Christmas time?

We have a fake tree, but I would love to get a real tree this year, love the smell of a real tree. Our cat usually climbs and or breaks several ornaments a year. Not sure what to do about tommy though. I can see him wanting to at least bat at the ornaments, and you can forget us putting presents under the tree until the night before. I also need to get him a stocking, found some cute but pricey crochet ones on etsy.
I would love to hear what everyone is doing to possibly avoid any issues with Xmas decor. Ohh and maybe since we havent done a DITLO in a while we could all do one for Xmas day or tree decorating or something festive?

So not looking forward to all the "no" don't touch that.....what a full time job....how many broken ornaments will there be this year?????

What really confuses them is when they get to help decorate the tree! Everyone is cheering them to touch, and hang the stuff. Clapping, taking pictures, then the next day, when they do touch, we FREAK out! WHats up with that???

Talk about confusing the little ones:eek:

Maybe a new plan this year....

I think with Nate's first mobile Christmas ( same age as our little ones are going to be more or less) I didn't put as much on the tree and anything I did put on I made sure it wasn't breakable or very important to me! And we told him not to touch it repeatedly! It really wasn't that bad. At least I don't remember it being that bad! Last year at 2 and a half he only touched it once or twice! So hopefully this year Alice won't be bad with it and then it will be plain sailing for all future holiday decorations!

I remember with DD being terrified of her toppling the tree or grabbing the ornaments but she didn't and it was fine. As a rule I decorate a bit higher up anyways because our cat likes to snag any low lying balls...cheeky bugger. I'm thinking/hoping that this will also help keep Colin away from touching the tree.

Colin is more mobile this Christmas than DD was though (her b-day is November so she was 13 months and not walking)...and I think we may have trouble Smile We usually put it up against a wall, so I'm not overly concerned about him knocking it, more just driving us crazy pulling the ornaments off. The ornaments however are all un-breakable, which is definitely the key to sanity!

I will decorate the tree during his naptime, to avoid any touching confusion - and it's just too much of a pain to concentrate with him toddling all around.

Good luck to everyone!

...oh and I would love to do another DITLO. Maybe on tree decorating day? We won't do ours for a while though - first weekend in December as we get a real one.

I won't be putting any of our pretty yet breakables on the tree this year. We do own a gate that I *might* put around it. But it's not pretty so that is last resort.
With 1st kid we did a big tree and gate. With 2nd we did a tiny Charlie Brown tree and few ornaments.

i have a 4 seasons porch...it is heated, but i only will turn the heat on christmas eve.....so i just decorate as usual, and shut the glass door.....so when it's lit, it is seen, we actually position it, so you can see it through the glass doors and it's infront of the bay window, so you can see it from the road,too......i've lived here and done this since my 15 yr old was 3....so it's been very easy for me....!!!!! trust me....we have still had our fair share of broken ornaments.....but over the years and all the homemade ones......we will always have plenty!!!!!!LOL!!!!!

In the Ive been able to put the tree up...Liam was one of those kids you could say no to once and that was it, he never went near it again....LUCKY US!!!
However CHARLIE once again is NOTHING like Liam the more we say no, the more Im sure he finds it a game and will go for it more...

So last year I set the tree (fake cant have a real one with all the hayfever suffers in our house Sad ) up on the dinning room table in the back corner so Charlie couldnt get to it...

This year as we have all of us around the table each night for dinner that just wont work, also Charlie will just climb to get to it...So Im going to set it up in my usual Christmas tree
spot and move my fire surround around it...As I will have Charlie and Molly to keep away from it...And I really dont want to have a year without a tree....

Ive even seen people hang them upside down from the ceiling and decorate that way to keep curious fingers away from it...different idea!!!!

I'm WAY impatient and have our tree up already! I decorated it on two separate nights while Izzy was asleep. The first night I strung all the lights, and then the following day turned them on so she could see them--she really liked them, but was interested in looking from afar. Then the next evening I hung all of our ornaments--DH and I each dropped a glass ornament while decorating. He joked that we're making up for lost time since we've broken none since we've had Christmases together. Izzy wanted to play with the shiny, sparkly balls on the tree at first, but after we told her, "those are not for you," she hasn't gone back to the tree. Our cats, however, have been busy... they have been stealing my annalee mice off of the tree and hiding them in my bed!

I'm sure it's going to be a different challenge for each of our kiddos, but so far I think Izzy is going to be ok. If she gets overly curious after we have gifts under there, I have a play-yard/gate I can place around the tree.

So far as another DITLO, I think it's a great idea. We may have more luck with participation, too if we don't have an assigned time to do it, but just have everyone do an over the holidays DITLO whenever they have time??

You are impatient! Ha! We are putting our tree up this weekend, And I dont recall ever putting it up this early. Zobi- I see those alot in stores but i dont feel like drilling a hole into my ceiling to make it work. It is a great idea to keep the kiddos away though. I am waiting to see my cat, he loves to climb the tree. ugh!
I totally agree and besides you know we all will want to share our Xmas day and or tree trimming pictures of our LOs!

Put our tree up today. Alice thinks it's her new personal play thing! Though toward the end of the day it was getting better, until I came into the room (from doing dishes) to find both my kids hitting the tree with their halloween light swords. I don't know if I'm going to make it 4 weeks till Christmas!

Dalton is a one man wrecking crew. I literally (literally) have to wash our couch covers 4-5 times a week. I sweep 2-3 times a day (or more) I haven't sat down since he started walking. That tree may just do me in. ROFL

Washing the couch covers 4-5 times a week? goodness what does he get into? LOL!

I put our tree up last night so when tommy woke up this morning i showed him the tree. He loves it, was all giggly about it. Day 1 of "no touch" has worked well. He hasnt even messed with it. My cat on the other hand things its his own playground and hiding spot from tommy. sigh... At least tommy is behaving right?
