Caden's birth story

Thanks Brianne for updating everyone.

We got up on 5/25 and took DS to school. He had a rough time being dropped off, I think he was afraid about the baby coming. Then we headed to the store to get some last minute things and went to the hospital. After I arrived, the hooked me up to the IV, drew blood and I changed into the gown for delivery. It was about 11:30 by this time. My doctor was supposed to come around 12:30, but he is always late and the nurse said it would probably be closer to 1:30.

DH and I were just hanging out in the room, watching tv and my mom came around 12:15. DH brought her into the room since we were still waiting for the doctor anyway. My back was really starting to hurt and I couldn't figure out why. I mentioned it to the nurse, but it was only really in one spot and I thought maybe it was a gas pain or something. As time went on, the pain kind of spread and I was getting more uncomfortable. The nurse came in to check me and looked at the print out from the contraction monitor and said "Do you know that you are having contractions every 3 minutes?" I said "Guess that it is why my back is hurting so badly." They didn't look like they were too strong and I wasn't feeling them that much at the time, except for the back pain. Over the next 30-45 minutes, they started to get much stronger and closer together. I was getting very uncomfortable. I didn't go through them like that with DS1 because by the time they were that strong I already had the epidural. DH said "You are getting screwed. You thought you were going to get out of the labor part this time, but I guess not." I kept saying the doctor better hurry because this baby was coming one way or the other and soon. When the doctor showed up around 2, he asked my mom if she was going to come in to the room with us for the c-section. She said no, that it was just going to be me and DH. The doctor said he thought she should be there because she wasn't there for the first and the first will always be the first and "my baby" and there should be something that makes this delivery different, etc. My mom asked what I thought and I told her that I was too busy being in labor to decide, but whatever she wanted was fine with me. She asked DH who said it was fine to do whatever she wanted. So, she said she wanted to come in.

At 2:29, Caden was born. I burst into tears as soon as I heard him cry. I don't remember doing that with Dylan. This c-section hurt more during than I remember with Dylan. I don't know if that has to do with my having had an epidural the first time or what. DH recorded the whole surgery. He asked if I wanted to watch it, but I haven't done it yet. I don't really have the stomach for those things. Maybe one day when it isn't so fresh. It actually turned out great to have my mom in the room because DH left with Caden and last time I was alone while they closed me up and that was hard for me. It was much better to have my mom to hold my hand and talk to me. The doctor explained each layer he was closing up, which was gross to listen to and I don't know how my mom watched it. Then he showed me the placenta and afterbirth and the sac where the baby was and how the vessels had started to die off and attack the baby which is what causes you to go into labor and was why I was going into labor. I really could have lived without seeing it. The recovery room was better this time because I didn't get the shakes like I did last time. But it was hard to go without seeing Caden all that time.

I am having a harder time with the recovery this time though. I am a lot more sore this time around than I remember being with Dylan. I am really hurting so percocet is my friend right now.

Caden is doing great. We do have one issue though. When they did the exam, they heard a heart murmur, so they did an echo and an EKG and found he has a small hole in his heart. They are telling me not worry and that they usually close on their own, but it is still scary. We have to go see a cardiologist to follow up.

That is it. We are home and happy and so far Dylan is being a great big brother.

Love his name, goes so well with Dylan. I forget, were you still undecided about the name going in or set on Caden?

Glad he's here! I am thinking and praying the hole closes up for him. KUP!

I just wanted to say I had a rather large hole in my heart at birth but it closed to a small murmur by the time I was 4. Now the cardiologist can't even hear it or find it on an echo. Congrats on your baby!

Congratulations! Re the heart murmer, it's apparently v common. A girlfriend of mine's daughter (now 3.5) had 3 small holes in her heart when born and they monitor them every 12 months as they often close over themselves. She still apparently has them but they've never affected her health, she is a VERY active, healthy little girl. Smile

Caitlin, all I could do was kinda whimper when Tanner was born Smile I love Caden's name, and your birth story is so sweet. I agree, very graphic dr! Eeek!

TFS, I am so glad it all went well, and hope your pain is better soon and that his hole in his heart closes up.

I'm sorry your c-section was harder this time - I hope your recovery goes quickly My doc didn't explain everything as it was happening or show me the placenta or anything - thank goodness - I definitely don't think I could have handled all that! I'm glad your mom was able to be there for you - that's awesome! I did a lot of talking to the anesthesiologist and then took a nap, lol - cuz I didnt have anyone in there with me once the boys were taken out - haha!
Try not to worry too much about Caden's heart - we went through that will Grace - she had to see the cardiologist and have the tests, and she's FINE now - they say it's very common and from all the stories I've heard, I believe that!

CONGRATULATIONS!!

I haven't been on here since I posted this story. Life has been a little crazy since we got home, but it is actually really quiet right now. Dylan is at school and DH had a physical therapy appointment and Caden is sleeping. It is strange for it to be so calm and quiet.

Thank you for all the support on the heart murmur and hole in his heart. Everyone tells me that it is common and not to worry, so I am trying. Still, you want everything to be perfect and it is a little scary when it isn't. We have our first pediatrician appointment today. He didn't see him in the hospital because our Ped doesn't have privledges where Caden was born. He was checked by two other doctors there. And we are supposed to take him back to the hospital tomorrow so my OB can do the circumcision. He was too small weight wise for the clamps they use last week. I am dreading that. I am starting to feel better. I am down to only a few percocet a day. I had been taking 2 every four hours when I first got home. So, I am getting there!

We thought we were going to name him Holden, but we weren't sold on it. We kept talking about the name in the last few weeks but couldn't agree on one. Then the day before DH said "What about Caden?" and that was it. We both liked it. Can't believe it took us until the day before!!

We haven't been back to the cardiologist since his one month appointment when it was the same as at birth. He told us to come back again in three months, so we will go in another month. I am really hoping that it is going to be good news one of these times and it will be closed. Thanks for asking!
