Gaining Weight...

I have a HUGE issue with the amount of weight I gain when I'm pregnant. With both my boys I gained 30 pounds, and I know that's totally normal, but I just feel like it's a TON of weight. I have recently started gaining (only a few pounds), and when I start, I probably average 4-5 pounds per month until I hit 30 pounds and then I plane off. I feel horrible about myself knowing that my butt and legs are going to get huge, and am self conscious all the time. All my friends who have had kids are stick skinny and had no issues getting their weight off, where I have to work/diet to get that last 10 pounds off.

I don't know how to get past the weight issue. I wish I could just let it be and know that it's for the best for baby, but I can't. Can someone please slap me and tell me to get over it!?

Please don't worry about the weight......please.

I always gain 35 pounds. I always end up right at the exact same weight-- weird, eh? I don't gain that much in the beginning, but weeks 20-32, I gain about 10 lbs/month. Smile

Your body knows what it needs. I would focus on eating good foods and keep moving......I think moving makes all the difference when it comes to labor and to bouncing back post-baby.

I agree with Audra - you gain what is needed for the baby. Eat as healthy as possible and you'll be just fine. I think during pregnancy, you have to forget about your weight. I haven't even kept up with mine this time, I don't care as long as I know I'm eating the best I can and the baby is growing as needed. With my daughter, I gained about 25 pounds total and came home just a little over PP weight. Going from 115lbs and gaining that weight was hard to swallow the first time. This pregnancy, I don't care because again...it's what is needed!!

I am a person who has struggled with weight gain her whole life pretty much, and I did NOT lose weight easily after my DD was born- in fact, throw in some PPD and other issues and I GAINED 10lbs in her first 8 weeks! Sad So, I get it. I have never been thin, and any low-ish weight I have ever maintained I have had to work for HARD. But even all that said- you have to let go of it with pregnancy. First of all- 30 lbs is a totally normal and healthy amount to gain. And it is what is best for baby. The best thing you can do is be proactive- like Audra said- eat healthy food and keep moving. Habits that will be good to carry on after the baby is born too! We do have a lot of in-awesome-shape mammas on this board (more than usual it seems? Go you healthy people!), which is great for them- but can be hard for those of us who struggle- but try not to focus on them, and just think about growing your own healthy baby.

All that said, though, I really feel ya... my DD was like 17 mos old I think when I found out I was preg, and I had JUST lost 15lbs, which FINALLY put me at ONLY 10lbs left to go to my pre-preg weight from DD (which never mind is still 25lbs over where I SHOULD be for a healthy weight)... so when I first got pregnant, I FREAKED. It's a really hard thing. It's hard to face the weight gain when you know it's going to be hard to get it off. I feel ya on that. But even so... just gotta let it go...

A 30lb weight gain in pregnancy is nothing to be worried about. That's a great number to gain. I gained 38lbs with my daughter. I never lost the last 12lbs or so but it wasn't so bad because I looked better with some meat on my bones lol. (I was a stick figure beforehand).

Don't worry about weight, just don't! We don't want sickly babies or moms. If it helps, try not keeping sweets in the house. That's what I do. How " bad" can I really eat if there's no bad food around? I gained close to 40 lbs with my daughter and lost all but 9 pounds before I got pregnant this time. I'm not worried. My husband loves me, I know how to lose weight and will, and for now I just exercise and limit sugar.

Ugh. I feel the SAME way. I gained 45 with DS. I am "trying" to keep it to 35 this time. I need to throw my scale out the window. I hate watching that number creep. But, its for the baby.. I just try to focus on that!

First pregnancy and I'm worried, because I haven't gained any weight. I'm eating good, so I guess the weight gain will come.

My midwife also says that gaining 40 lbs during a pregnancy is pretty normal for her moms.

In my first pregnancy I didn't gain any weight until after 20 weeks- and then I ended up gaining a total of 35lbs. I'm pretty much doing the same thing now- haven't really gained yet, so, I'm assuming I'll do the same as last time.

I'm with Mara - I didn't gain until late in the second trimester and then it piled on it seemed at one time. But I was also WAY sick with my first DD so I lost weight at first and then just maintained. With this one, I'm up a few pounds already because I've been able to eat often with hardly any sickness.

I've gained about 10 lbs this pregnancy. I wasn't thinking much about it until my last dr appt and I had hit the 10 lb mark. I gained 12 lbs with DS in the first trimester (which is a lot I think), but started from a higher weight (I am just about at what my pre-pregnancy weight with DS was now, I lost the baby weight plus 15 lbs with him (thank you, breastfeeding). Hopefully that happens again this time. Even though I have gained a fair amount in my first trimester both times, with DS I still ended up gaining a total of 35 lbs. It tends to level off when my eating goes back to normal in the second trimester. I don't like this stage, where I just feel fat and bloated, I'm definitely looking forward to that no-doubt-about-it baby bump.

With my Daughter I gained 18 lbs and with my son around 21 lbs...which is fine because I had some extra to begin with..so I was happy with that...and it came off and then some within a month or so ....this time...I have gained not quite 8 lbs but that is really not bad...I just decided to try to stick w/ 20-25 but I am ok with more like the first time around...if I was stick thin or underweight maybe then I would want to gain more...a lot of my friends that are rails gained like 50-60 lbs with each and went right back to being their skinny little selves...must be nice...that will never be me lol

DS, I gained over 75 lbs!! I was huge and he was 9.3 at birth.
-- what I leaned, NO, you cannot eat anything and everything you want!

DD, I gained about 45-50 lbs.
-- I ate normal, not much more than normal, but I had a lot of water weight.

I think your body knows what it needs and what it doesn't. I went both ways, watching and not watching what I ate and I still gained more that the 'normal' amount.

I've gained 7/8lbs so far but that will increase pretty fast but I'm keeping pretty active and trying not to overeat. I have HUGE babies so I'm going to get BIG soon enough. My second baby was 9lbs 12ozs and I ate so much towards the end with him. I gained about 25lbs with him so I expect the same again if not a little more this time. I'm not going to allow myself to worry about until the baby has been born and I'm fully recovered.

Well I decided to just have DH hide the scale so I won't be so fixated on the numbers. As long as I'm being healthy, I'm not going to worry about it.
