Help?? Formula.

So I go back to school on Monday and I have a little milk pumped and frozen but not nearly enough. He's going to have to take a bottle once a day. Well today I tried to give him his first bit of formula and it was a disaster. I wasn't expecting him to love it but he took two little sips of it and spit it out then started bawling. It wasn't too hot or anything, he just wasn't having it. Formula is nothing like breastmilk! It smells completely different, you have to shake it and that makes bubbles, I don't blame him for not liking it but I have to get him to tolerate it. My dad said to just keep trying a little every day, any suggestions from you experienced mommys?

Mix it with breastmilk and slowly shift the ratio to more formula over time. Start with 3/4 EBM and 1/4 formula. That way he slowly gets used to the different taste. That's what we did with DS1 and it worked.

Oh, to clarify, mix the formula up the way you normally do with water FIRST, don't use the breastmilk to mix the formula, it makes it hard to digest. So, for example, for a 4 oz bottle, you could start with 1 oz prepared formula and add 3 oz EBM, and then after a day or two do 2 oz prepared formula and 2 oz EBM, etc.

I don't know, maybe get small sample sizes of different formulas? Maybe he'd like a different brand more. I'm one of those who doesn't produce a lot when pumping (which I've heard is actually normal for a full time breastfeeder such as myself), so I feel for your situation. Good luck!

I second this...worked great with my first 2 babies!

Has he been drinking breast milk from a bottle already? Sometimes it is also a matter of the bottle (does the nipple "agree" with him?) Rose-Lynn is very particular about the bottle type. Good luck! And have a great first week of school.

I know it's only been a few days but he hates it! He hates bottles and he hates formula. I've tried 4 different types of bottle nipples and I've been mixing the formula with the breastmilk, we've made no progress. He just waits until I get home which is only about 3-4 hours so I suppose that's not too big of a wait for him. I'd like for him to be able to eat when he's hungry and I'm not there, we'll keep trying. Smile

If it's only at max 4 hours, I wouldn't worry about it. :bigarmhug:

Is it the bottle he hates? Or the formula? Can you get him to drink breast milk from a bottle?

If its the formula only but will take a bottle - and if its only 4 hour stretch once a day - I bet you can get that much extra pumped in a 24 hour period. Even if its just a little bit extra per feeding.....its at least something you can know is available.

Sad Sorry ..... I hope you arent too stressed!!!!! I hope the school part is going well.
