Interesting link on c-section rates

Someone just shared this link with me-- and thought I'd pass it on.

http://www.cesareanrates.com/

Basically, this site permits you to look up the hospital you plan to deliver at and learn about their c-section rates. It is eye-opening.

If you are interested in avoiding a surgical birth, there are steps you can take to minimize your chances of having a section, and this data is helpful in decision making. Happy looking!

Some hospitals have rates as high at 58%+ and some as low at 14% (the World Health Organization recommends rates between 5-10%, where the best outcomes for moms and babies are found, otherwise the sections are "extras" and do more harm than good.)

My state doesn't allow percentages online for the public. Haha Oh well, I'm having a csection anyway. I've never had a natural birth, but I don't understand how a woman could not want one if it's for the best interest of her and baby. Less babies and mothers die now because of this measure. Otherwise the baby and mother are put at risk. JMO though.

Lorah-- I agree that c-sections are life-saving and really important when needed. The problem is, that we are sectioning more moms and babies than ever before, and we're not enjoying better birth outcomes because of it.

There is a "sweet spot", where the moms and babies who need c-sections get them and it saves them. But that "sweet spot" is less than half of the rate that we are currently seeing in the US. It means moms and babies suffer poorer outcomes-- bc we are performing more surgical births than are necessary.

Here are a couple of interesting videos on the subject:

I don't mean to suggest that c-sections are "bad" or anything like that. Just that we are performing surgical birth on lots of moms and babies who don't want or need the surgery, and that carries risks and consequences to the health of the mom and the baby.
