I've got myself worried sick! (Sort of XP)

I posted this on the birthing naturally board earlier today, and thought I'd post it over here, too. Just in briefer form. Smile

I had my 34 week follow-up u/s and appointment today. The u/s was to follow-up on his ureters (tube from kidney to bladder) to make sure they were no longer enlarged (right one looks good, left is still a little big. No real problems, though!). I had my u/s and was sent on my merry way to my appointment with the doc 10 minutes later.

Well, we get in there and we're talking and she mentions the cord is around the baby's neck. Argh, what?! She said they'll repeat an u/s in 2 weeks to check on that and his position (he's in an awesome position right now - head down and looking at my spine!). My biggest concern with the cord being around his neck at that point was the fact that they are now talking repeat c/s if the cord is still around his neck at delivery. At first I was all up in arms about this, but now I'm just terrified of a cord accident. I've been doing some research, and of course have read the worst of people losing their babies in utero due to cord issues.

I know I shouldn't google, but I was honestly just looking for some material on whether it was true or not about the cord being around the neck meaning instant c-section. I'm actually so worried about him now, I think I'm going to call the doctor first thing tomorrow morning and go over it all with her. She didn't say much about it (nor seem too concerned), but I just want everything explained to me better now that I've had some time to think about it.

Blah. Thanks for listening! I'm just worried, now!

Hugs. I wish I could help the worry go away. I'm sure she'll explain it tomorrow and you'll feel better.

Aw, I can totally understand why you'd be worried, and I probably wouldn't be able to help worrying if I knew the cord was around my baby's neck either, BUT it really isn't a big deal. Cord accidents happen, but it is very rare, and most of the stories I've heard involve the cord being wrapped around the baby in several places and several times. A cord looped loosely around the neck once sounds scarier than it is, and is probably not going to cause any problems at all. Your baby will be just fine!

Thought this might help...good to remember a baby cannot be strangled by the cord because they don't breathe through their mouths in utero. The issue is ONLY if the cord becomes wrapped so tightly that the cord itself is compressed, which is a rare situation, only 0.4% of babies WITH nuchal cords have this happen.

Thanks for your kind words, ladies!

Maggie, thanks for the article link!! I really appreciate it!! Maybe I'll end up sleeping tonight now instead of staying up to poke him and make sure he's still moving! Wink

At my most recent Perinatologist appt, the sonographer told me that they usually don't even tell the patient if the cord is around the neck. She said the doctors usually shrug it off and the only time it is usually an issue is possibly during labor and that is why they monitor your baby. She brought it up bc I was telling her about my fear of cord issues. It helped me relax so I wanted to pass that along!

my son had the cord wrapped around his neck twice...he was fine. A lot of babies are born with the cord around their neck. Try not to panic.

just wanted to let you know I have delivered 3 babies with cords around their neck....only once was there a problem. The one time there was a problem happened to be the time we knew about it ahead of time...I specifically asked the doctor about it because I was worried...he said, "they deliver baby's with cords around their neck all the time....it RARELY caused a problem"....well it did cause a problem for this delivery but the doc's in the NICU reinforced to me that these are "flukes" he could count on one hand the # of babies they see a year from a cord accident compared to the thousands of babies they admit into their NICU a year!! Try not to worry!! My other 2 deliveries were perfectly fine with the cords around the neck!!

Thanks, ladies! I'm feeling a lot better about it and not so worried. I mean, I'm worried, but not as panicked as I was yesterday! I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed he's untangled himself by my repeat u/s in 2 weeks!

DD also had a cord around her neck, she ended in c-section due to cord issues but not because it was wrapped - rather it was not fully functioning and the placenta was "old" and she was showing very large decels during contractions. Maggie gave great advice and a good article - cord accidents are so rare and babies are born with loosly wrapped cords on their neck SAFELY all the time. I wouldn't let them push you into a c-section just because of that.
