Nursing ?'s

I have two questions...I nursed Kaylin for nearly 15 months and didn't have these issues...

1) Abram makes this sound while nursing, almost sounds like when you're drinking out of a straw and there is very little liquid left...maybe a slupring sound...and it hurts my nips so I'm thinking he's getting a lazy latch?

2) Sometimes he will thrash his head back and forth like a fish with his mouth open over the nip and never latch on...then get frustrated. Usually it seems to be around when he is over-tired.

Thoughts/Suggestions?

Henry does the head thrashing thing all the time. I usually just take a break for a few minutes and try again. He seems to do it most when he's tired and has been fussing for a bit.

I have the same issue as you for #1. I thought maybe it was a latch issue too, but when I searched online I seemed to come up with a lot of information on oversupply and forceful letdown. One of the "symptoms" of oversupply says the slurping/clicking and also says they do shorter nursing sessions, which is how Cora is...5-10 mins max on each side and she's done and if she pulls off I am squirting her in the face.

So, really, I have no idea....curious to see what others think.

This is totally Abram, he gets choked a lot too. And even only nurses 5-10 minutes each side. Hmmm!

I would think there would be a definite difference in how a lazy latch sounds compared to an oversupply guzzle/slurp. The fact that your nips hurt from this, makes me think it is more about latch than supply. But I could be wrong.

I don't think the time thing necessarily is as good an indication- my DD would only ever nurse for about 10 mins, and only on one side per session- but she never had any problems, so...

Z does the bobbing around and not latching sometimes too. I have also noticed that he does it when he's tired. He has definitely shown me clearly that he is not into comfort nursing as much- he nurses when he's hungry, and he gets upset if I offer the breast when he's not hungry. Much to my dismay, he's taken to the paci quite readily. All new territory for me, because DD never wanted a paci, and was ALWAYS happy to nurse- ALWAYS.

Did you post on the breastfeeding board?
