Umbilical Cord?

OK, fell off. But her belly button is full of dried blood and/or more cord?????

I cant remember from DS1.....will all that gunk get pushed out? Should I clean it?

Im looking it up online now, but thought one of you may have advice..............

THANKS!!!!

When DS's cord fell off it was a bit gunky/bloody underneath too. I didn't do anything. When we went to the ped on Thursday she said that was the right thing to do- and she gave it a good look and swabbed it with alcohol just to make sure. But, from what I understand, as long as it doesn't stink and isn't pussing etc, you should be fine!

Abram still has his cord, the Pedi last week said it looked like it would stay on for at least another week. His cord was super thick! The top is starting to detach and it's gunky underneath - like Mara - we'll swab with alcohol once it finally comes off.

I had this question last week and my ped told me that the belly button is nothing but a "scar" from the umbilical cord so go ahead and clean it with an alcohol wipe...inside too. It does not hurt the baby...just feels cold to them. I was a bit nervous because I thought it would hurt but even with a little puss in it, it doesn't hurt them.

Max's cord fell off on day 5. He had some scab left over inside his button but that fell off on its own a few days later. I didn't do anything, just left it alone. He looks fine now.

Lily lost her cord but her button was a bit gunky. I've been swabbing it with peroxide on a q-tip every few days or so. It's painless and tidies the area up well.

Seth just lost his cord this morning (day 6.) We use goldenrod powder on it....but it was a bit gunky underneath. You can swab w alcohol like others suggested....it will clear up in a few days.

Yeah, to be clear, as I understand it, the recommendation now is to not do anything at all, unless you see puss, or it smells- then you can clean it with alcohol. Our NP even said the blood was nothing to worry about- just to wash normally, etc.

I know-- it i so funny how many things have changed since we had our first (9 years ago!) When we had Taya, they instructed us to clean her cord stump daily with alcohol. We were also told to us a side sleeper/prop thing the first few days and to sleep her on her side....lol.

Finally, Abram's cord came off yesterday and it's gunky in there so I am swabbing it with alcohol when I can remember. With DD's, they told us at the hospital to use alcohol swabs after each diaper change but didn't tell us with Abram!
