I hardly ever post because I have so many other things going on, but I'm still pregnant! Lurking 1-2x a week though!

I'm sure you are headed to the hospital now, but yes, I check my own dilation all the time once I hit 35 weeks (well like once every couple days or so). I'm about a 3-4 right now. Doesn't mean anything for me though. I can walk around for weeks like this!

Any tips on checking? I've checked my cervix for TTC before but never for dilation.

Well, obviously wash your hands well with soap and water first! Then usually I just check while on the toilet. If your cervix is still long then that's what you can "attempt" to put a finger into. If you are dilated at least a cm you shouldn't really have to force anything (and DON'T obviously). It's never been an issue for me because once I'm about 34 weeks I'm already a good 3 cm at least. If you don't notice anything "long" in there then you are probably starting to efface quite a bit. I know for me I was much longer last week, but this week I can tell my cervix is shortening as well. If you are starting to shorten it can be harder to locate the cervix. Anyway, if you are dilated more than a cm you can slide your finger around a bit (not rough though) and feel about how much. I can also feel a little bit of my bag of water. I can also feel a very round, hard baby head both inside and outside of my cervix. I am always tempted to sweep my own membranes once I hit about 37 weeks, but honestly, I wouldn't have a clue what I'm doing, and that is really something that is best left to "the professionals."

ETA: Oh, and if your baby's head is still really high, you may not be able to find your cervix, but it's worth the attempt anyway if you're curious. Although I've only recently been checking for dilation, I have been feeling my baby's head since about 28 weeks.

Thanks for the info Laurie! We tried to check with DD, but we were completely useless and had no idea what we were looking for. To be honest, I'm still quite sure we'd have no idea what we're looking for. I suppose when you've had enough pregnancies and enough professional checks you have a better idea of what the heck you're doing!

I cant imagine even trying to check to see if I was dialated.. This new dr office has you do the strep (gbs?) swab yourself... (my old office did it for you) and that was hard. Im SOOO swollen everything hurts! (even to just pee hurts from all the swelling/pressure)

I've read everything I can about checking myself and still gave no clue what I'm feeling for when I try. Not just pregnant but when I have tried during my cycles, too.

On a funny note, I recall on one of my birth boards the topic of self checks came up and a crazy lurker appeared and started freaking out that women have "absolutely no right" to check their own cervix. It was the craziest drama ever. Her husband was an OB and she kept on saying no one without a medical degree could touch a cervix. Funny memory.

Just noticed I haven't seen Leah around here in a couple of days...wonder if she has any action in the baby arrival department? Maybe just quiet over the long weekend? Hmmm
