Car Seats

Has anyone installed their infant car seat yet? We have yet to do that...because we have to move DD's seat and then we can't all fit in the car anymore (DSD comes to stay sometimes). I'm thinking maybe this weekend after DSD goes back to her mom's house.

not installed, but moved DS to the window seat in preparation. Ours was pretty easy last time, so I'm not worried at all.

DS loves being by the window, but I wish I could have them both in the middle.

I did just take the baby seat apart and washed it all, now hubby has to put it back together for me.

We won't install ours until baby is here. We won't be driving the 15 passenger van to the birth center, so we'll just throw it in the Camry on our way out the door, and latch it in real quick before driving home. I like to stay on my hands and knees in the back seat on the way to the birth center (it's an hour drive), so the seat can't be installed in order for me to do that! Smile

I haven't yet. I am having a seating dilemma!

We have an 8 seater - a Chevy Traverse. Driver and passenger, full middle row with 3 seat bench, and full back row with 3 seat bench. Looking back, we should have got the 7 seater. But we're stuck with the 8. Here is my dilemma - I can't have the infant seat, the convertible seat, and the 2 booster seats PERMANENTLY placed, because then the kids in the very back can't get to their seats without climbing over the middle seat, or climbing in from the trunk. Yeah. 7 seater would have had 2 separate seats in the middle row giving access to the back!

Right now Ella and Eli are in the very back in their high backed boosters. Emerson is on one side of the middle, and the other side is folded down so that the big kids can get to the back. You can't really fit 2 carseats of any kind RIGHT beside each other. The seats are pretty narrow. So I think my plan is: Eli stays in the very back with his high back booster. Emerson moves to the other side of the very back with his convertible carseat, kicking Ella out of her spot. The infant seat goes where Emerson's seat currently is, on one side of the middle. Ella will have to use the bottom booster portion of her seat only, removing the high back, because she will have to wait until the 2 boys are in the back, then we will flip the seat up and place her booster in the other side of the middle........

It weirds me out to have Emerson SO far away in the very back. But I can't have him and the new baby in the middle because then the back would be blocked and the seat couldn't fold down. Also, the back doesn't have the LATCH clips for easy installation, only the middle does. So I'd have to use the seatbelt to secure the convertible in the very back, which I don't like as much as the LATCH system clips.

Gah. Must decide.

I hear ya! We have never had DD in the middle (other than in rental cars) because we have always had DSD around sometimes and the Jetta is small. She loves being at the window but is still RF so her view is limited. The taller she gets the more she can see. I love it when she tells me the things she sees now. I'm often amazed how far her view is now...like when she sees bunnies on the ground. We drive through an area daily that has wild rabbits on the side of the road, I've never pointed them out but she sees them a lot now.

Sandra, I feel for you!! We had the same situation when we had 4 kiddos and a mini van. Guess what? The older two had to climb over the seat for an entire year before we got our new (BIG) van. What a pain... especially when it was rainy or snowy!! I hope you manage to come to a better solution then that! Maybe you can install 3 in the back side by side??? We only had a 2 seat bench in back, so that wasn't an option for us, but it might just work for you.

Have you tried the belt on Ella without the high back? My 6 year old is currently still in a 5 point harness, because in a booster (without the high back) the belt slices right into her neck. It will be at least another year before she can handle a booster without a back... My oldest was just turning 8 (and is tall) when she transitioned to a regular booster seat. And even now (a couple more months until she's 9) is no where near ready to sit on a regular seat.

I need to do it soon to make sure everything fits. I'm borrowing my sisters infant seat until mid-August but I've never checked to make sure it fits with the other two. I can easily fit three across my huge back seat (Taurus) but sometimes different seats don't fit as well.

Officially, Tori doesn't need a booster as of next Tuesday when she turns 8. But that's not happening. She still prefers her high back booster because she says it is way more comfortable. Lucas is still 5 point since I don't booster until age six and he has four months to go. Right now he is in a Britax Frontier 85 which is pretty bulky. I may have to put him in a Radian (um, I have three. Car seat junkie). Then hopefully there is room for the infant seat. If not, baby is going straight to a RF Radian because a RF and FF Radian fit together like puzzle pieces.

When Lucas needs to booster this fall, Tori may have to give up her booster seat. She's plenty tall enough and legally old enough but I'm not thrilled with the idea. And neither is she... We will see. I don't wanna buy a van!!!!

We have. A friend gave me her Chicco Keyfit, and I installed it when she have it to me, just so I wouldn't have to keep it in the house. That has been a few weeks ago. DS and his booster seat moved to the back row, DD and baby are sitting in the captains chairs in the middle row.

I have DD in a Radian but I'm really hoping to keep baby in a bucket for a while because I love the convenience of it! My plan is to get a second Radian eventually (don't tell DH!). DD is RF and can hopefully stay that way until she is at least 4. I'm a bit of a RF freak and I know I'm going to need to relax that soon.

Our truck is another story all together. DD might have to go FF when baby comes in there. Booooo! She doesn't ride in there often though, so it might not be a big deal.

Heather, the Radian can't RF in the truck? Or do you have a different seat in there? We use an angle adjuster with ours and it fits just about anywhere.

We have our Britax Marathon in the truck. The problem is that the truck is a short back seat...so DD's RF Marathon peeks through the middle between the two front bucket seats. I'm sort of hoping an infant seat might fit behind the passenger seat without the base. We'll only really use the truck for camping. Baby will mostly be in the car.

I haven't installed ours yet either but I just moved the car seats around to be prepared - mostly to get my two older ones used to sitting next to each other instead of at opposite sides where they can't bug each other Wink I just got a Mazda CX-9 a few weeks ago and can fit 3 across with the right seats. Both of my older 2 are forward facing and harnessed so it limits the configurations we can do, but I did end up having to take out DD's Graco Nautilus because of how wide it is and bought a cheap Cosco high back booster to use in it's place until she can buckle herself in at which point I'll let her move to the 3rd row (probably a year or so) back into the Nautilus. I have her in the middle, DS in his Graco MyRide65 on one end, and baby will be on the other end. I figured my DD would be much more helpful next to the baby than DS who might poke his eyes out on a short drive...

Sandra...can you slide any part of the middle seat forward with car seats attached? My middle row is a 2/3-1/3 split and I can slide part of it up enough to squeeze into the back even without leaning the seat back forward at all with a car seat installed (but ONLY if it's latched, if it's seatbelted, that won't work). Just a thought so you could maybe keep Emerson and baby in the middle row?

I am not even sure ours has been bought yet, my dad is a bit of a procrastinator. If it comes down to it we have DS's 3 year old convertible we can use, he was only in it for a year (we have gone through a bunch because he is a clever little monster) before we switched him to the backless booster, which is the only one (surprisingly) that he would stay in without trying to get out of (**sigh**).

We haven't done ours yet but I keep telling DH he needs to get in the attic and gt it down so I can wash it! If it comes down to it we had given a lady at church a bunch of passed on things when her grandaughter was preg and she brought it back to us this week. she included things we hadnt sent like a Graco carseat. This one is newer than ours (ours expires in December this year I think) and it doesnt expire until 2017... its right in the garage so if baby decides to show up early we at least can throw that one in the car.

YAY! We fit the infant seat in the truck!!!!! I'm so happy. I was really worried we'd have to turn DD FF but we got it to go behind the passenger seat. I can still sit in the passenger seat but there isn't much leg room.

There is just barely room between the infant seat and the passenger seat in front. LOL. See how DD's Marathon sticks out PAST the seat?

Looks good Heather! I just realized that we currently have two "older carseats" sitting in the back seat of the camry. I guess we should get those out at least, so there will be space for the new one! Also, I do have to do a little re configuring of seats in the van, so I should probably get on that too!!

LOL, I've been obsessed with the car seat thing for months because our vehicles are both 'difficult' for RF and I like to extended RF. LOL. I need to pull the truck seat out again though and wash it. Also, I didn't store the latch clips properly so I have to do that.

DH finally WD40'd the car driver's seat and he says it's latching better now. When I took it to the car seat installation clinic a few months ago we moved it forward to put DD's seat behind it and it wouldn't re latch into it's spot! We were freaking out! We got it to latch FINALLY but I was worried about moving it again. I'm hoping to change DD's seat sides today so that we can put the infant seat in soon. Well, at least the base.
