Momma's of boys.... circumsision question UPDATE post 1

Any of hte moms out there get their boys circumsized using the plastibell method?

UPDATE: so the plastibell ALMOST came off last night (3am). it was hanging by a thread and Mommy was so happy that by today I'd be able to do a real bath for our little spit-upper....... when I was helping DH change diapers this morning... IT WAS BACK ON! how the heck??? Im guessing in an early morning diaper change (dh said he changed him 3 times?) it got flipped back on. (it was hanging but next to his thing. so its like it had flipped off. GRR. hoping the other part detatches and the whole thing comes off with it?

Yes, both of mine had the plastibell. I found it to be pretty easy to care for. I don't have any experience with the regular though.

Do you remember how long it should take to fall off? I want to say the dr said more than 8 days... but the paper says if not off in 8 to call. tonight it looked strange... but it could be that its about to fall off? (we had DS1 done with the metal ring method)

I know DS1 took more than 8 days. It got to where there was just a bit on the bottom side still attached and that little peice seemed to hold on forever. It was probably about 2 wks and I remember was in the range of normal. It did eventually fall off with no issue.

We were told ten days with DS. On day 11 it hadnt fallen off, nurse line said to give it a few more days. By day 14 his penis was starting to swell, took him to the ER they tried to pull it off using lube and weren't able to, took him to the pediatrician the next morning (it was looking awful by this point) and it took her quite some time to actually get it to come off and she said she had never seen that happen before.

If it is looking odd I would take him to the pedi and have them take it off if it has been the required number of days.

Also, I thought that they weren't doing the plastibell anymore because of so many issues?

at our hospital part of the drs do plastibell and part do the metal ring. the pedi we had said that he preferred the plastibell, and had been doing it for over 16 yrs. if we did it the other way we woudl have had to wait until the following week because the other drs that did it with the metal ring were not on duty.

Oh my gosh, I feel just awful because I didn't even ask the doctor what method was used. :/ I was kind of out of it from pain meds when they came to get him...

Aww. Don't feel bad! DS1 had it done with the metal ring--requires gauze and ointment... plastibell (ds2) doesnt require anything... just wait for it to fall off and keep dry. You'll know when you change him!

We just did the regular no ring or plastibell (this one wasn't offered to us). We dicided to just go with the regular circumcision cause they said it had the best looking end result. But who knows. We just put a bunch of vasoline in the front of his diaper for the first week and now he is perfectly fine!

H had the plastibell and it fell off in 5 days. Looked really strange even for a few days after, really swollen and puffy in spots. I was honestly a little nervous about the final outcome but looks fine now. DS1 had gomco (standard) method at the hospital by the on-call pediatrician (i had our regular pediatrician do it in office this time) and we had to do the whole Vaseline routine and I loved the plastibell in comparison. Anyway his doc said it could take up to two weeks to fall off.

My first DS had plastibell, it took about 12 days to fall off. My other two boys had it done freehand, no plastic or metal ring. I had to use vaseline and gauze for about a week.

I didn't know there was more then one way to do it! The bill that I just got for it says, "Circumcision with clamp and block". I also didn't know that some OB's preform circumcisions! Was I the only one that didn't know that? I am glad that J didn't have something that had to fall off, I would have been a nervous wreck. I hate the umbilical stump, I can't imagine waiting for something to fall off of his boy parts!

You'd be hard pressed in town here to find anyone to do a circumcision these days. Also, it is considered 'cosmetic surgery' here and isn't covered by medical. Things sure are different regionally!

Crazy how that is. It's very uncommon where I live to not get it done. DH insisted on it because he honestly doesn't know anyone who isn't. Like you said, crazy how things are different regionally.
