NT Scan

Do all of your Doctor's order NT scans for you? They have to be done between 11 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days, and I'm wondering if I'll be getting one. I guess my old Doctor ordered them for everyone, but I'm not sure if most doctors do.

Since I think I'm a lot further along than the Dr. suspected, I'm wondering if I should call and ask if he'll be ordering one because I'd have to have it done next week at the latest.

Just wondering if anyone knows how common they are. I was under the impression that they were ordered for everyone but after looking online it seems like maybe they're not as common as I thought.

ETA: Not that the results of the NT would change anything for us, I just like the ultrasound opportunity!

Sandra, from my experience they are not automatic in Edmonton. At lot depends on the particular doctor but I would call if you want to get one. My OB did not do an NT and got mad as I refused an amnio.

I was given the choice. I agree that the results woudl not change anything. I just wanted the extra ultrasound!

They only offered me one with DS, because I was 35+ at that point. I think it's more commonly offered to women of advanced maternal age. Also, with this baby, assuming it holds on, the doctor told me there is a new blood test out that replaces the NT scan. They have me scheduled for that test on Nov. 29.

My doctor offers tests, but does not push any on me. I am thankful for that because so many doctors do!

I don't recall my doc offering them before. I asked about it this time and he said if I wanted one he would refer me to get one but they don't do them. I decided to skip it since they do u/s at every checkup until they can check the h/b with Doppler anyway.

I have had a couple OB's and both of them offered but did not recommend them. they say if you are under 35 and have previous healthy kids that the arn't nessesary. Plus, insurance doesn't cover them for me.

I haven't gone to the doctor early enough to get one. Plus after working in an office for the doctor that specializes in those tests and genetic testing, I don't think I could do it, I am not against it, I just would have trouble with worrying until the child was born. So if the baby does have an issue that isn't detected at the big US then I don't want to know until we can actually deal with it.

My OB does it in his office. It's definitely a nice opportunity to see the baby. Smile

When I first scheduled with my midwife, they asked if I was going to want to do testing. I was never asked with my doc for my last one. I think it's the type of thing you normally request if you're at higher risk or have some history. I personally don't like extra u/s, I'm still trying to convince DH not to get the one - so for me it's really a non-starter! And now that I've heard baby once with the doppler, I'll probably just wait until I can find it with my dad's stethoscope, last time that was at 18 weeks, so I'm good with that. I can't stand when doctors push so many tests on people. Again, you have a different experience as your doc last time did it for everyone.

I asked for it last time, but that was before I switched OB's. I would like one done again this time.

1 - because I like to be prepared in case it did come back as a possibility. I worked with special needs children and I know how wonderful they are, but I think it is good to be prepared just in case. I'm 34 and I know it is even more so 35+, but the chances are increased post 30

and 2 - because I never miss an opportunity to see the LO! Wink

Thanks for the replies ladies. Looks like it's not overly common.

We just barely get U/S opportunities here. Usually we have 1 U/S at 12 weeks and 1 U/S at 20 weeks, and that is it, and I really love to see baby in there! Last time I got an additional one at 35 weeks because I was measuring really big.

Although, there are private U/S places here, and there weren't in my old city at all. So I guess I could always shell out the bucks if I really wanted to see baby later on Smile

My doctor generally only does 8 week u/s and a 20 week u/s. I had an extra one with DD because her fluid was a little low, but that corrected itself. I've already had three with this because of the bleeding I've had. I will only have one more if all goes well. Unless we pay extra to have a 4d.
