Pretty much the only pets I had as a "little" kid were fish. My mom is allergic to pretty much everything with fur. I had a few fish when I was younger, but they never lasted long.
Then when I was in high school, we moved cross-province to old family land/farm that my grandfather grew up on. We didn't actually farm or keep animals, except for chickens a couple of years. And while the chicks are cute, grown up chickens freak me out. LOL.
Dogs, cats, fish, a rabbit, hamsters... lots of pets over the years.
My mom is the worst pet owner ever. She's one of those people who thinks a puppy is cute and then it grows up and she doesn't want it anymore. We fight about this A LOT.
That said, we had two pets we actually got to keep. A cat who lived 17 years and a beagle. Although, we didn't keep the beagle forever--my uncle went through a severe depression and was very attached to the dog. He kept asking to keep the dog "for a few days" and eventually we let him keep it! But at least that one was for a good cause and not because mom got bored. I often tell her I'm surprised she kept US once we weren't cute anymore. Sigh.
Now I have two cats that are ten years old and they are still my babies. They sleep in my bed.
