Ok, so when I am able to actually fall asleep I usually wind up on my back, which I know I am not supposed to but when am I really supposed to stop that? I've never been much of a back sleeper, but it seems that I find that position most comfortable.

I am the exact same way. I normally hate sleeping on my back, but I find myself doing it more. I figure there is not much I can do to keep myself from doing it while I am sleeping.

I've heard you should stop laying on you back at 4 months. I'm a side sleeper so it doesn't affect me much...but ask me about rolling over in 3 or 4 months! Ha ha! So hard!

I have heard that you don't need to worry about it too much, if something becomes a concern, your body will move automatically. I never worried about it last time, sleep was so hard for me I would take it anyway I could manage it Sad

I heard 16 weeks is the magic "quit sleeping on your back!" number. I've also read in multiple places that when you wake up on your back, it's your body saying "Hey! Roll over!" Try getting a pretty squishy/flat pillow and put in under half of your back on one side to angle you off being flat on your back. Sometimes my hips & shoulders get tired of having all my weight on them all the time so this seems to help me a ton and I can tell it takes the pressure off. It's like halfway between being on your back or side.

The only thing that happens if you sleep on your back is that the baby will eventually start to put pressure on you and cut off YOUR blood supply... when that happens you will automatically wake up. So, basically you will just keep waking up several times a night, but it doesn't really pose any danger to you or your baby. How do I know this? Because I sleep on my back for my entire pregnancy. It doesn't matter how many times I roll onto my side - I always wake up an hour or two later on my back.

I am just now finding I don't like lying on my back. I really want to, but when I do, after about 90 seconds I start feeling sort of dizzy/nauseous. So I'm constantly flipping sides. Ugh.

i am a stomach/side sleeper. I definitely feel worse after waking up on my stomach than after waking up on my back.

Doesn't it also restrict blood flow to the placenta and affect how much oxygen the baby gets too?

i still sleep on my stomach it doesnt bother me at all and i end sleeping on my back at some point of the night

It would probably depend on where the placenta is located. In most cases it wouldn't make a difference. There are probably some times that it would, BUT the mom would still wake up when her blood is restricted, so the constant flipping back to her side would then "fix" that problem as well. Honestly, depending on where the placenta is, laying on your side could pose a problem too you would think. You have to keep in mind that women have been having babies for thousands of years, and only very recently has this "don't sleep on your back" thing even been brought up.

I was more thinking that the large blood vessel being restricted goes to the placenta...but I see what you're saying too. And yes, woman have been laying on their backs for thousands of years and were 'fine'. Smile
