So much pain in left breast.

I remember this exact pain with Lucas on the same side. When he latches and starts sucking, it burns like fire up my nipple, to my armpit and partway down my arm. The pain lasts about 10-15 seconds and the more he nurses the less it hurts. The nipple is also already agitated and hurts when it rubs against my bra. Ouch. I don't believe it's his latch because there is no pain whatsoever on the right side.

My initial thought is something getting clogged? I've tried feeding twice on that side before switching today even though it hurts. I figure getting it good and drained would be a good thing. It did bring done relief but the latch pain is still excrutiating.

Any ideas?

Pump it out? I get the sensation similar every once in a wile but its a good to me after a bit ( like stretching a sore muscle.)

I had a week and a half of excruciating pain on my left breast. Last Monday I pumped it out ONCE and it has been better ever since. My nipple was brutalized in that side too. I did lots of air time on it and finally got some prescription nipple cream for it. It even hurt when my towel brushed it after a bath! Take care!

Oh, one more thing, try different nursing positions. The football hold has been a life saver for the sore side!

Interesting. I can't pump milk out. Nothing comes out. I don't know why. But I used the pump anyway and even if it would not come out it must have pulled some of it out that was clogged? Because the pain isn't gone but has lessened.

You know, even when I was HIGHLY engorged in the beginning with past babies, I was never able to pump until closer to the 2 week mark. Anyway, I did have a stinging sensation every time Madelyn would latch on from about 3 days pp - and then it lasted for about a week. It was only when she first latched on (about 10-15 seconds).

Yup, that's exactly what I'm feeling.

interesting about the pumping... I've never tried after the first two weeks. I've always chalked it up to "I can't pump" after the first ten days or so. I'll hav to try again in a week or two. Thanks!

Have you tried pumping while Oliver nurses on the other side? Also some women need a photo of their baby or something to be able to pump.

I hope the pain goes away soon. Smile

Well, I always have pumping issues too. I can't pump unless the baby is actually in the room with me. If I hear the baby cry that will usually do the trick. The best thing is to nurse on one side and pump the other though... that's the best way to get a letdown!

Oh, I had another thought. What about lightly massaging the breast while Oliver nurses? I think that can help unclog ducts. Also many different nursing positions.

It worked! I pumped while he ate and got about half an ounce. Sounds like nothing but that's a record. And when he switched to that side, the pain was much less horrible. It lasted a few feeds, it hurts again now so I will probably do it again. It almost feels like the clog is really close to the nipple.

Glad it worked! I only got 2 oz when I pumped but it meant all the difference pain wise.

I would also suggest using soothie pads to ease the nipple pain. They work fairly quickly to heal the sore nipple and that alone could add some relief. If your breat gets sore and hot to the touch (might also be red) then I would say you have a clogged duct and need to see your doctor - I had this one time and it came on fast - a round of antibiotics and all was good again. Good luck!

Glad the pumping seems to be helping! I had nonstop issues with plugged ducts with my first baby. I'll second both trying to pump and switching up what hold you use often. Hope it continues to only get better!
