Tired Cues

What tired cues does your baby show? I'm so out of practice that I forget all this!

M is a VERY happy baby, but I've noticed recently that if I miss his tired cues and don't get him to bed quickly it's MENTAL TIME around here. When he's overtired he screams uncontrollably and won't even nurse. It's so sad. This morning I watched the clock for when had been up 1.5-2 hours knowing he'd be getting tired soon. I nursed him and he went right to sleep, no sadness. I need to learn to see more cues.

In general she gets cranky. When she is not mad about something and is still screaming her head off, won't go to the breast or take a paci, I swaddle her, hold her tight and she's out within 5-10 minutes.

I hate when I miss that "golden window" for putting them to sleep. If you wait too long it IS a madhouse! Ethan doesn't rub his eyes or anything, he mostly just starts getting fussy when he is tired. I guess I am still figuring it out!

Jonah will fuss some. He also gets this sleepy look in his eyes. It seems like he kicks more and harder when he gets tired. I don't know if it because he is trying to stay awake maybe?

I've noticed the spazzy kicking too. K did that also.

Noelle - are you swaddling in the day? I'm trying not to but it would really help with sleep. I've just heard you can't do it 24/7....

The Golden Window is such a good way to put it. LOL. Missing it SUCKS. Ugh.

I've never heard that. I do alot, but not all the time. I've let her take naps in her swing sometimes to0....shhhh Wink

I don't think my parents swaddle her much and just put her in the sleep blanket I gave them.

Around here they aren't even recommending swaddling anymore because the binding of the hips can cause hip issues apparently. Some people say to just keep them out of the swaddle for X number of hours a day. I can't remember the exact number. We still swaddle but our blankets are quite loose at the hips. We swaddled DD a lot.

She's out of the swaddle 70% of the day and I really only do it on her arms and it is very, very loose on her hips and legs.

It just really does the trick to relax her down for a nap or bedtime

I stopped swaddling Sad now that I have stopped that J wakes up at about 5am to nurse. When we still swaddled he would sleep all night.

For some reason I just stopped swaddling these last two boys of mine when they were a few weeks old. I wonder if it would make Ethan sleep longer at night.....LOL. He'd probably freak out if I swaddled him now. He's so used to having his hands by his face. My DD was swaddled for bedtime til about 5 months.

We are still up 1-2 times a night...mostly twice right now. UGH. And that's swaddled!

Are you BF mama's nursing both sides at night? I think I might need to force him to stay awake and nurse longer if I have any hope of a good sleep.

We swaddle for naps and night time...we have with the other two and they are fine. They were both early walkers-10ish months, so I don't think it bothered their hips.
I do breastfeed at night, and he only takes one side, so I pump the other. It's pretty nuts, but it helps with milk supply for work.

She pretty much only ever takes one side. I'm producing alot, so one side is at least 3 - 4oz. I do notice now that she is sleeping longer, her feeding before bed she will take the other side for about 5 minutes or so.

you are not nuts Smile

I do the same thing and have since we got home from the hospital. It keeps my supply up and I don't stress about not having enough. I also wake up still at the mid mark during the night to pump since she is sleeping through.

Oliver has no cues. He will be grinning and cooing and with no warning he just starts sobbing. It's awful! I feel so bad but I can't figure him out.

As for swaddling, Dr. Harvey Karp (Happiest Baby on the Block) says swaddle as much as you need to. I've tried it but Oliver knows its daytime and wants none of it. At night, he grins because he knows its the start of bedtime!

When I nurse at night I am nursing lying down in bed, and completely delirious. LOL. Only one side at a time. But he is only 1 side at a time during the day. I have no idea how long he eats for each time he eats at night. I just fall asleep and let him suck as long as he wants. Sometimes when I wake up he is still latched, and sometimes he is just sleeping and my boob is hanging out Smile We're pretty casual about nighttime feedings!

It's similar around here but I try to stay awake and put him back in his bassinet. I'm totally phobic about rolling onto him that I just don't sleep well with him in bed.

We have upgraded to bigger swaddle blankets because he got too big for his newborn ones. He's SO big compared to DD.

I LOVE Happiest Baby on The Block. I want to get the Toddler book.

M was up 3 times last night. Totally sucks. I think he's having a growth spurt because he's eating a LOT.

I think M is going through a growth spurt right now. That and gas seem to wake him. He's having his vaccines today so I'm not expecting a great few nights. Sad
