Update on Kia

Kia asked me to post an update as she is home, contracting and trying to sleep.

Kia went into L&D around 2pm. At first they said she was fingertip dilated with lots of contractions so they wanted to watch her. Then after a couple hours on the monitor they said she was 1cm+, 70% effaced and having contractions 8-11 mins apart. The doctors think this is the start, but early, so they sent her home. She's trying to get some sleep now in case things pick up.

I hope it either calms down so she can get some rest or picks up and goes quickly. I'm sure contractions at that rate are exhausting after going on too long. Best wishes for an easy and quick labor when the time is right.

thanks ladies. Im still at 12 min but (TMI) "clearing out", big egg sized globs of mucus, and very sharp. When i walk they are closer together. When do i call? my water hasn't broken yet...

So hard to say. I've known people to be contracting that far apart for close to 3 days before giving birth. Your water may not break at all until closer to the birth. You could always call to tell them what's going on and see if they want you to go in. I'd be inclined to wait a bit longer. but you never know!

yeah i was thinking like 8 min consistently because it is a bit of a drive...unless my water breaks of course.

Everyone is so different!! My contractions typically start 5-7 minutes apart, so I definitely don't get "excited" until they have been 3 minutes apart for an hour or two first. I'd say the best gage is usually how STRONG the contractions are. When you can no longer walk or talk through them, then you are getting close (maybe 2-4 hours at that point).

Glad you were able to squeeze in a pedi Smile Ugh about the continuing contractions and not knowing when to go. I don't have any good advice there. Thinking of you and best wishes for labor to pick up and go smoothly.

Awesome! You are getting there. I guess I'd wait until they are under 10 minutes apart and then head in, unless the pain gets ridiculous!

Never having gone into labor with help before, I have no idea how far of a space is considered adequate, but I do know that with my last baby, my doc said it wasn't likely my water would've broken on it's own at all so definitely don't wait just for that because maybe you'll have a bag of steel like I did Wink Super exciting!

l was going to suggest 5 minutes as well since that's considered "active" labor. Hope it goes quickly!!

Is there something you can do or someone you can visit by the hospital? My hospital is 40 minutes away as well but my SIL lives right across the street so our plan is to go to her house and hang out when we get close but not close enough to justify going in. Just a thought!

Hang in there. Even if there is no change now, with contractions 5 minutes apart the change will come and could come quickly! Smile

poor thing! How frustrating. I hope she can get some rest.

Silly question, but at what point are contractions close enough together to stay?

Too much... The girl who has been fighting off contractions for months on end now can't get them to accomplish anything. How frustrating. I hope she gets some rest.

It's not about "how close" the contractions are, but whether or not you are making progress that counts. I've had contractions that are 3 minutes apart for a couple hours at a time before, but never really got intense and were just BH. Eventually they get weaker and stop all together. I've also had contractions 3 minutes apart that got intense and dilated me from 5-10 cm in about 2 hours time! Some women will have contractions for days 3-4 that are 3-5 minutes apart, but their body just doesn't progress until the very end of that time. Labor is so different for all women!!

I think that the fact that she's been having contractions on and off for months is just normal for this pregnancy. The reason she got sent home is because the contractions themselves aren't causing any changes. Personally, I think baby isn't ready....but that's just me. I'm no expert, having never laboured before. Blum 3

I just feel so bad for Kia. This whole pregnancy has been so hard for her and all these contractions have to be so tiring! Hopefully she can get some rest!

thanks for keeping everyone updated heather. and thanks everyone. I am still contracting every 8 min or so but some are intense and some not so much. my BP was great in spite of the swelling. I ended up on oxygen all night and didn't sleep because i couldn't go on my side or she would drop again. I am exhausted and now have a headache i think because of very little sleep. my Dr thinks its getting me somewhere because i am thinning... she just legally cant help it along yet. She does want me to be as active as possible to help my body along and thinks it could be just a few days and my water will break or i will show progress. i see her again Friday morning to check my bp, and on her. If she shows any more signs of distress they will of course help me out.

What do you mean she can't legally help it along?

she cant break my water or put cervidill or any induction methods until at least 38 preferably 39 weeks. Im in a good labor pattern and favorable for helping me dilate but no medical reason to do so before that time. Her 91 baseline heartbeat just seems to be what she likes when shes sleeping, it freaks ME out tho and makes ME have to wear oxygen.
