Vinegar for Heartburn (Heather)

Heather (and everyone else ;))...
Remember when you mentioned that you'd read Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with water would help heartburn? Well, even though I didn't believe it, I tried it anyway a few days ago because I was in serious pain and I stand corrected: it definitely worked, at least for a while! I'd say it was slightly more effective or about equal to a couple Tums, but good to have on back-up in case I'm at my daily allowance of Tums. Doesn't taste great though

Anyone else have a great heartburn remedy?

I haven't tried it yet. I get this burping thing which I'm not 100% is even heartburn...but it sucks. I had it several times last night. I should try this next time.

What are your heartburn symptoms?

Tums is my best friend. I tried pickle juice when I was desperate one night.. it worked but only lasted for like 3 mins. I also take pepcid if it gets REALLY bad. (I wake up with it and go to bed with it....and have it all day in between. yuck!)

I find sometimes tums doesn't really touch it. Going to sleep is my favorite cure.

Do you lay flat when you go to sleep? On the nights I'm burping I go to sleep with my head propped up.

:lurk:

They gave me liquid Maalox when I was in the hospital in the antipartum ward, that was 8 years ago so things may have changed but it worked for me then

Eating salt and vinegar chips is less vile than swallowing vinegar and works as well. My nursing friends say to eat them and sip flat Coke. The combo is supposed to affect acid levels in your stomach.

Ice cream does it for me. Milkshakes are even better.

I just started prescription Prilosec but I am wondering why since everything I read says it takes as long as eight weeks to really work?

tums usually does the trick but lately im finding myself having to retake them during the day and even sometimes in the middle of the night when i get up to pee. I've trying to take zantac 75mg in the morning before i eat breakfast and that helped the other day never got it..also i notice when im starting to get hungry is when the heartburn kicks in so i try to eat something small before breakfast/lunchtime

Mine is the worst at night too. My heartburn basically feels like I'm very slowly throwing up and my throat burns up higher and higher. It's really great with this sore throat I picked up from my kids too

I did liquid Maalox with both of my other pregnancies but Tums is doing an adequate job this time, at least good enough that I can fall asleep, but if I wake up to pee or something, I have to pop a few more.

I was on the prescription version of Prilosec last time and this time I've been on protonix since day one. I still take tums sometimes tho.

Ummmmm...I could do the chips but when I'm feeling gross, coke just makes it worse. Ummmmm, chips....

Ya, that's sort of what I was thinking...but it's acid, not real food, right? I haven't had that yet this pregnancy but I definitely did at the end last pregnancy. I'm just getting run of the mill indigestion I think. I use to get it sometimes when I wasn't pregnant but it has picked up since my BFP. I spend a LOT of time burping...but nothing really comes up. I guess that part is good. It's normally in the evening and sometimes I'll have it two evenings in a row and then not for a few days. It's odd.

Yeah sounds like mild indigestion. Mine is definitely acid, not food. I've woken up in the middle of the night chocking on stomach acid (lovely, right?). The "good" thing is that I ONLY have this issue pregnant so only a few more weeks...

Ya, I think I'm not having it yet because this baby is hanging out front more. I had pretty brutal lung issues last time that I haven't had this time. Our house is 3 floors and last pregnancy I couldn't walk from the basement to the top floor all at once. I'd be completely out of breath. This time it's fine. My stomach isn't as high either I don't think. I think baby is 'hanging out' more and giving my organs a break.

HA HA HA HA, my hubby would laugh at me if I had to take a break walking down. Blum 3 It's nice to be able to go up the whole way without feeling like death. Blum 3

It was generally because Robbie's feet were at my gallbladder and he LOVED kicking! I would stop due to pain

You really don't want to know! I thought I was in labour at 24 weeks Sad Went in and they were worried it was my appendix until I let them know that I had already had it removed 15 years before. They thought they were going to have to operate that night...12 weeks of little feet at my gallbladder sucked. U/S techs would watch him kick me and say "bet that hurts" - no kidding! I was on morphine and could still feel some of the pain! Robbie was home from the NICU for 4 days (had been there 5 days) when I had emergency surgery which had been scheduled for my due date.
